Diagnosed my fridge - thanks youtube
« on: September 11, 2012, 10:38:48 AM »
My fridge (which I bought used) started making a noise which sounded a lot like a compressor going out, however the freezer was still freezing and the fridge still cooling. So I went to google, then youtube and listened to what a compressor going out sounds like. It sounded a lot like my fridge. Then I found another video to test it and recommendations on diagnosing and just plain cleaning the fridge. So I did all that and discovered that the blower motor was simply wobbly and causing a rattle. Extra deep vacuuming, cleaning, and tightening and loosening screws did the trick.

Here's the catch though, the used place I got it at threw in a free warranty since the switch to the exterior light for the ice/water dispenser was broken. I called them about the noise, left a message, and of course no call back and subsequent calls get voicemail. So much for the "warranty".  Thanks to youtube and google though I feel a lot safer about buying another used fridge when the time comes, but who knows, maybe I'll try a compressor replacement.

And on top of all that, pretty much anything that I need to fix has a video or how-to online for free. How about that! I'm sure the rest of you know this already and are taking advantage of the true greatness of the internet, but even me (who works in IT) never thought someone would take the time to post a step by step instructional video for a complete novice on how to fix your fridge.

Nice post.  I also have found some helpful how to videos on youtube, including one that pretty much nailed the cause of a leak coming from by freezer.  Lawnmower and other small engine probs are good to look up there as well.
