Decent networth IMO
« on: June 10, 2016, 03:53:50 PM »
Net worth of 115k, including real estate, cash and investments.

I am 27 years old currently. Recently got serious about savings after getting engaged. Once we pool our money together we should be sitting at about 165k net worth.

Feeling pretty comfortable about my situation at this time.

Congratulations! Much better than where I was at that age.

For some reason, you made me think of this. I find it motivational:

Here's one that you query over any age range, I assume they are pulling from the same survey data.

Congrats OP!

You're in GREAT shape!

At your age, I had a negative net worth.  I got things turned around and am set to retire in just over two years at the age of 53.

Congratulations and keep us posted!

Thanks for the encouraging words.
We are currently saving about $50k a year combined, hoping to hit $250k net worth relatively soon.

Unfortunately housing prices in Chicago are extremely expensive and a decent house is about $550k.

lillyhammer,

Prodigious savings target.  Don't be discouraged by living in a high cost of living area.  I'm in LA with similar housing prices and we plan to stay here post FIRE.

This makes me feel fortunate to live in a LCOL area. My house was about 1/5th the price of yours. At 25 I have a similar net worth to you, but a lower income keeps me from saving as much as you. Congratulations! Good luck on hitting your target, it looks like you have a great start!

That's a great net worth to only be 27!

It's not so much the housing prices around here that scare me (I'm far out enough in the suburbs they aren't too terrible), but HOLY SHIT PROPERTY TAXES WTF.

I had every intention of getting into investment property when I moved here, but the more I look at the taxes, the more goddamn terrified I get.

Property taxes are indeed insane around here.  But they are more insane in some places than others.  I pay around $2500/yr in Romeoville (owner occupied), but my mom pays four times that in Batavia.  I have a (small) rental house in Montgomery, and its taxes are only ~$1500 but its market value is only ~$25k.

My rental house cash-flows and my current house would cashflow if I rented it out.  Taxes can be hurdle around here, but you can work around it and select markets accordingly.

I wouldn't worry so much about the actual number when you are in your late 20's. I would focus on laying a good financial foundation and lifestyle that is sustainable. Put yourself in a good position to amass wealth in the near future. Don't go for the highest paying job if it has the most hours and longest commute.
