Day Trips
« on: July 09, 2015, 02:57:13 AM »
Being a retired senior, and living alone, I often do not have anyone who wants to go with me on a spur of the moment drive in the country, which is something I really enjoy.  I live in a beautiful small town, and have very quick access to beautiful country roads and scenery.  I know some of you will say I should be biking, well when I was younger, I did bike back and forth to work in the city, and enjoyed it, but now some health issues mean that I drive.  I have a Ford Escape Limited,  2010, which I just love.  I saved a lot by buying it used, but that is another story.  I used to go to Tim Horton's or maybe another fast food place when I travel to another small town, but now I pack a simple picnic lunch, put it in my cooler, and I use my Tim Horton's Thermos for tea, which keeps it really hot for hours.  I also have a man's old metal thermos box, which holds this perfectly.  Now I have complete freedom.  I eat wherever, and whenever I want, and do not worry about finding a fast food place, or even feeling awkward going into a restaurant alone.  It saves a lot of time and money too.  If it is a gorgeous day I really do not want to be sitting in a restaurant, even if I have company.  Last Sunday the weather was perfect, and I was up around 5:00 a.m.  so I packed my lunch, made my tea, and headed out to explore Prince Edward County, a very picturesque area of Southern Ontario -- sandy beaches, wineries,  farmer' markets, numerous antique and used shops etc.  I had a great time, and I really do not want to do it any other way now.  When you need a washroom break, consider the local library. These washrooms are usually better than those in stores, and the parking may be easier too.

Sounds like a lovely way to spend a day. If the gas you burn fits into your spending plan go ahead and enjoy the trips. No need to worry about what others think and whether or not you are biking everywhere. Retirement is about living life to the fullest so go on and enjoy it!

Another Sr. here.  Great idea.  I will keep in mind that the fun doesn't have to end when my body starts to poop out.

Perfect advice.    I need to be more aggressive with packing food for day trips and even overnight trips.  A cooler full of food could save our family big money on road trips.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
