"more Mustachian than Pete" ;)
« on: March 27, 2018, 09:54:48 AM »
For the imaginary more Mustachian than Pete* thread:

https://youtu.be/QcJoW9Lwzs0

*only cared about money sufficient to put a bit of food in his belly
*live as simple as possible
*be outside as much as I want
*follow the land
*lives off grid, on a bus in the bush, in a climate with cold and high heat
*no phone, no email
*runs and runs and runs (128 km marathon annually!)
*76 years old

*That could be a good subforum here. It's very funny that people think Mr MM is extreme. He's not, he knows he's not, but so many feel it's too much. Then we've got a bunch of folks like Dag on the planet :)     For me, this dude is inspiring!

Thanks for sharing @jooniFLORisploo !

I used to live in a cabin part-way up Silverstar Mtn & would see Dag running up & down the hill (didn't know his name until recently).. I even saw him XC skiing UP the slope that everyone was alpine skiing down.
Always was curious about who he was and only recently heard about what a legend he is.

Here's a 103 year old pre Mustachian, starts talking money around 5:45. School teacher, gives practical advice, saved and bought up rental property, never used credit.

:)   I had to include a wink in the title because Iím so opposed to competetiveness and think itís generally silly to score/compare people. But I also thought it could be helpful to share stories like these because of how often the public describes Pete or Mustachianism as ďextremeĒ. Here, most of us are living in the lap of luxury! Plane rides, robots to wash our dishes or transport our butts, auto-adjusting heat in our single-family apartments, this vs that ingredient... I think Pete is absolutely lovely, but these are the folks that impress and inspire me.

I submit Dick Proenneke's life at twin lakes.

I appreciate the amount of effort he put into documenting his life there in an era without smart phones. It looks like an amazing retirement.

Index funds and a Dick Proenneke lifestyle suggest an alternate approach to FIRE... Earn and invest 1/2 as much as required for FI with vanguard and then disappear to live any "extreme" lifestyle for ~10 years while your money works for you to achieve true FI. You can extend the math to whatever investment and growth time you're comfortable with.

My approach was closer to REFI than FIRE before I started reading MMM. Now it's somewhere in between. We're currently more financially "flexible" than "independent".

Pete is far from extreme.......this place has been slowly shifting demographic to upper class white collar folks who spend middle/upper middle class amounts and pat each other on the back.

Or maybe I'm just missing the point, and we're supposed to celebrate him because he's created a world for himself in which he just... does him, as it were.

I don't think we need to celebrate him (or anyone else).

For me, it's important to contribute socially, etc, but it's not for everyone, and all sorts of things can be considered contribution: setting an example of a low-consumption, environmental lifestyle so that others know what can be done could be a wonderful one.

Pete is far from extreme.......

Yes! As noted in the OP, he's not and he knows he's not, but so many people think he is and write off Mustachianism as impossible, too hard, too extreme, etc. But Pete and the vast majority of us here don't qualify as extreme (or even badass).

Posting so I can find this again and read the links when I have time. IIRC, there was a previous thread discussing Dag. Anyone remember it? It may have just been a mention in a journal which isn't searchable.
