Cut my Daughters' Swim Lesson Costs by becoming an Instructor
« on: September 21, 2016, 12:12:30 PM »
Both my daughters love to swim and in the Northern Virginia area it is pretty crazy.  There are some winter teams/clubs where parents are dropping $2-3k.  We just moved here and had a great time with the summer team (June-July) and the daughter wanted to keep swimming after it ended.  After looking at some of these crazy expensive options and running away from them as fast as we could we found a once a week Saturday morning option that fit with what we all were looking for.  It was still kind of pricey, but in comparison to the others it was a steal.

After going a couple of weeks and being really impressed with the level of coaching and feeling good about making the right call for us I was talking to the director of the program and she mentioned that she is always looking for more coaches.  Light bulbs went off as I've coached different youth programs for quite a few years and have been swimming competitively most of my life.  I offered that I would be interested in coaching as I'm there anyways and next thing I know I'm paying next to nothing for the lessons.  I don't coach my own kid's lanes as they do better with other coaches, but I'm having a great time with the lanes I do work with.

That's a great idea! My son is on the swim team, it's so great for him. We belong to a family health/swim club and he's able to practice independently on off days there. My own small bad-assity is that I barter for the membership so pay exactly nothing for us to use the pools year round, plus the other amenities.

That is awesome...I'll have to try and keep this up with any of the kids' activities.  While there is plenty to do in our immediate area for free, quite a few things cost some bucks and finding ways to make them free or at least at a reduced price is really nice.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
