Cut food spending in half!
« on: September 02, 2016, 11:52:13 AM »
Yes, yes I know we can still improve BUT-  in the last three months my family has cut or food spending IN HALF and the going-out spending over half.

Plenty of room to improve (especially the eating out), but to those who complainypants on MMM and say it can't be done, well... your wrong. :)
I finished the binge-read of the articles in late May, wrote up a plan for my family, we all agreed and three months later our direct comparison is attached.

(Previous three months were pre-MMM, most recent three months were post MMM)

Nice job!  Was there any one thing that stood out as the biggest change, or just a bunch of little things?

Nice job!  Was there any one thing that stood out as the biggest change, or just a bunch of little things?

The fridge-at-work lifehack was the source of the junk food spending cut (still need to get better there with the family).

We absolutely quit buying pre-made grocery store items.  If we see something that looks good, we google the recipe and make it ourselves.  So far I have made three different meals that are better than anything I have ever gotten at a restaurant (with a one-time restaurant exception).  I'm pretty sure that is what accounts for the reduction in grocery store spending since we eat the same number of meals and are the same size household.

Edit:

Here is the first paragraph of our agreed-upon plan.  We later revised it to include (1) meal out every two weeks.

Priest Family Plan
For increasing savings to 50% (or more):

Immediate:
•   No more eating out.  We can make tastier food from home with minimal effort and half the cost.
•   Begin adjusting the AC up and the heating down in order to get acclimated to a more realistic set of temperatures.
•   No more buying processed food of any sort.  If we wanted to buy it, we can learn to cook it ourselves (and have the plus of knowing how to cook even more!)
•   No more buying new items (of any sort) without-
o     Waiting a full 7 days to see if we really want/need it
o     First determining if it can be bought used in good condition (for half the price)
o     Finally determining where to purchase the item new (if new is required).  No more non-comparative shopping.
•   No more washing clothes (or towels) that are still clean.  It only gets washed if they look or smell dirty.  Bonus, less laundry!

Good job! Cutting it in half is huge!

I can't do that. Literally, it's impossible. We're a house of 2 adults and already as it is we only spend ~$200 per month. In fact, I actually expect grocery costs to go up at least $50 per month soon because I'm moving to a higher cost of living area. :(

I wouldn't worry too much.  Savings in food/groceries certainly has marginal utility (as you can see by not wanting to reduce further).  I am much happier buying 236$ on food for a family of 4.5 than spending 100 or 800.  To save another 100, we would have to switch to mostly rice and beans, no meats, low fruits, some veggies, nothing except water to drink, etc, etc.  With the exception of the lingering fast food habit, I am very happy with this level of food spending.

Super inspiring! I'm curious, would you say you are eating a bit healthier now too given that you aren't buying process or restaurant food?

Significantly.  I have more energy, food is fresher and my SO and I have dropped a few pounds each.  I think the salt and sugar levels of the processed food were the primary factors in that.  :)

The recipes on here have helped tremendously: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/off-topic/mustachian-recipe-index/

PriestTheRunner I hope you don't mind, but you've inspired me so much that I had to do my own comparisons. I'll post it in a new thread so I don't hijack your wonderful praise here. Mint charts are fun! But they could work on their load time, right? :)

Cograts on the found energy and weight loss! That's huge (no pun intended).
