Not particularly badass, but it was the best category I cound find.
Two years ago, I decided to get the US Airways card in order to stop 49K miles from expiring. I paid my $49 fee, got a bunch of miles and figured it was cheap and I'd use the miles for a vacation. Put a lot of wedding expenses on the card and built up a good stockpile of miles (that I have yet to use).
Last year, I didn't want to pay the fee again, but we were house hunting so I did. My mortgage broker said not to rock the boat with any changes to anything. It's a new card, it shouldn't affect length of history (maybe would help?), but it would change the amount of available credit and just best not to risk it at all. So I paid my $49 fee again.
Now, it's time to renew again. We are actually just in the midst of buying a house with a closing date next month - worst time ever to make a change. But this time around, I picked the phone and called them. Told them I took up the card to avoid expiring miles. That I have a no fee credit card that gives me 1% back (ok, over the past year it changed and now I have to spend a certain amount to get the 1% back, but it does give it). I spend thousands on the card each year and that I didn't want to pay the fee anymore - could he waive it?
The answer? Of course they want to keep me as a customer and they will waive it - but it has to hit the card first on the 29th before they can do it. Call back the first week of December and thanks for being a customer.
It's ridiculous. I call the cable company every year to get them to drop their prices for cable+internet (don't jump on the cable. Mr. CommonCents won't give it up and I admit I enjoy it too.) I am in the midst of arguing with an insurance company about my bill. But I never thought to call up the card rather than canceling it. Some weird mental block. Demolished.
Next change: Not highlighting my hair. Started doing it post a bad break up/grad school graduation in 2007 along with cutting it short. I pushed it to every 4 months, and got it done near my parents for cheaper, but it's time to go back to my "roots" - grew up with my mom cutting my hair.
