cost per calorie calculator app
« on: November 04, 2018, 09:39:25 PM »

After reading Killing your $1000 Grocery Bill, I was excited to apply the principles of evaluating food by caloric density and not just cost.

Even though we're on a specialized diet (Mito Food Plan), I knew we were not considering the amount of calories in our food purchases. So the next time we were food shopping, I asked my partner to divide the calories in foods by cost. She tried for a bit, but eventually said "you know you really should write an app for this."

That was the inception of ¢runch

The app is in beta and I would be excited to receive feedback from any Mustachians willing to try it out.

A worthy goal, but I would suggest introducing separate grading by class of food instead of lumping vegetables in with fats and starches.

If I just want the most calories per dollar spent, it's hard to beat things like generic vegetable oil at ~$0.40 per 2,000 calories. Even rice and beans are more expensive than that at my local supermarket.

I'm grateful for the suggestion. What do you think about a separate grading guide for vegetables as follows.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
