Cheap Phone Plan
« on: May 05, 2016, 01:43:56 PM »
So, a couple years back, after devouring MMM wisdom, I called Verizon and re-negotiated my phone plan.  Was paying $94/mo for unlimited talk, text and data.  In talking with the rep, I discovered that I averaged just under 2GB of data usage a month, so I got a plan that had 2GB of data, unlimited talk and text.  Cost: $73.  I was pretty ecstatic to be saving $252/year!

But fuck me, every single month since then, I've gone over 2GB of data. WTF?  So average phone bill has been $86/month.  Still saving over the old plan, but not what I envisioned.

Tired of this bullshit, I pulled the plug and called T-Mobile the other day, after finding out about their $30/month pre-paid plan for 100 mins. of talk, unlimited text, and unlimited data (w/4G speeds for the first 5GB, slower after that).  New phone + $40 credit cost me $74.

Just got it yesterday, but haven't activated it yet because I have questions about transferring contacts and apps over from Verizon.  Not even sure it's possible, but I need to explore the option first.  Looking forward to saving some real money soon.

Will post updates on my experience as I log some time with the new phone.

So before I activated the phone, I went to a local T-Mobile store to have them transfer my contacts (as recommended on their website).  Well, it turns out that (a) they hadn't maintained my old number as I was told they would, (b) they put me in the wrong plan, and (c) the $40 card they sent me was inactive/expired. It took about an hour for the customer service guy -- who was fcking baller, btw -- to straighten everything out, but straighten it out he did. I had to leave before he could transfer my contacts (had to take my dog to a vet appt.), but I'm heading back after work to take care of that.

So far, the phone is working beautifully, I have a signal from Boston to 35 miles NW, and I'll only be paying $31.88/mo!  HELL YES!

From $94 to $32?  Shit, yeah.  That's badass.

How were you such an active reader here that you never changed phone plans to prepaid?

In a word, inertia.  Though also, I'd just believed the hype about T-Mobile not being as good as Verizon, so didn't want to leave a superior carrier for an inferior one.  Stupid.

Got my contacts switched over that same day, and all my apps came over as well, and I'm now a happy T-Mobile customer.  Worked beautifully in all locations this past weekend, from Boston to Hartford.
