Cheap Amusements
« on: August 25, 2014, 08:29:17 PM »
We're planning to go to a nearby amusement park later this week, which can be pretty costly. By purchasing tickets online I was able to save more than 50% on tickets and parking. Yay coupon codes!

I also found that our local library has yearly passes which can be checked out once a year to many places in our neighboring metropolis called Portland, and also some more local places.  My wife took a friend and his friends family, total of 4 adults and 3 children, for free to see a beautiful Japanese Garden which normally would have ran over $50!

Libraries, they're much more than just books.

I may have mentioned this elsewhere already, but it's worth repeating: the Toronto public library system has passes for pretty well every museum in the city, usually given out every Saturday morning. The popular/expensive museums (Science Centre, ROM, AGO) go pretty fast, so you need to show up early for them (my TO neighbourhood is smart/poor, so people sometimes line up for an hour or two before the library opens on Saturday!). But other cool small museums (textile, ceramic, shoe) are often available all week long.

My local library in upstate New York has passes to most of the museums in a 50 mile area.  You can take them out for 3 days and usually are for 2-4 people.  My daughter has managed to visit almost all of them and they're a great resource when people come from out of town.

If you're in the NYC area, most museums are free (pay what you want). Cloisters being a favorite of mine (an old European monastery with mideaval art/history stuff).

We go to a theme park here in pa called Knoebels ever year. This place is great; old school family fun, free to park and free admission. You only pay for tickets for rides, generally in the $1-$3 range. With little kids who aren't crazy about a ton of rides at this point we can spend all day and spend maybe $40-$50 and have a blast. They encourage you to bring in your own food/drink which saves even more.
