Changed internet providers. One for the little guy
« on: March 20, 2014, 06:02:22 PM »
I have become increasingly tired of the two big players becoming ever bigger players and there being no real competition in our neck of the woods (willamette Valley around Corvallis, Albany, Lebanon down to just North of Eugene.

I looked Cell phone based providers and all of those look good until you realise their services are limited to 10GB per month or whatever.

Well a firm that has been in business since about 2011 is call Alryca Internet. They have been building their own network using their OWN Wifi transmitters. They need to do a signal check,.. Well the guy turned up and it transpires that have a transmitter line of sight of my house (not obstructions) less than a mile away.

Their lowest claimed speed is slightly slower than my DSL (1.0Mbps vs 1.3 measured currently). I have managed to knock the DSL provider down to $37 a month but their service still leaves something to be desired.

The new provider also has a service which is claimed to be 3Mbps (2.3 times as fast) for $40.. I.e only $3 a month more.

Plus get this.. I call them on the phone and there is a REAL person there!.. No 45 minute waits for customer service!

When the tech came out to do the signal check I told him IF I went with them I'd want to run the cable all neat and hidden like... "no Problem.. Here, have this 100ft of Cat 6 cable and if you don't go with us drop it off at our office sometime!"

This is starting to feel like service and so I thought I'd give 'em a go.

Not a huge (if any) savings but it seemed like the right thing to do..:)
