Car Hacking/Sharing
« on: November 26, 2020, 12:42:06 PM »
This probably falls on a pretty narrow set of circumstances, but kind of like house hacking, to lower expenses, how about car hacking/sharing?  I have a roommate, so I house hack already, but I also do this with my car, now.  My roommate use to lease a car, because of COVID, car usage has gone down drastically, and my roommate ended up not procuring a vehicle in anyway after the lease was up.  So we worked out a reoccurring dollar amount for car "borrowing" that includes maintenance, property tax, and registration renewal, split the car insurance, and a fuzzy way to split the gas.  So kind of like a car sharing program?

At least in my mind, this probably only works for someone you have a certain level of trust with, trust that he/she is a good driver, lives close or have an easy way to get access to the vehicle, and doesn't care what kind of car it is as long as it's reliable (in this case, a 9 year old Honda Fit).  So far, this experiment has been going on for a few months, and so far so good.  Last year, I spent about 2k on vehicle related expenses, and I project that if I car hack for a year, it should lower my vehicle related expenses down to about $700.

Also a win-win situation; I save over 1k/year in vehicle related expenses, and for my roommate, it's way cheaper than leasing a car.  Plus, one less, severely underutilized, 2000 pound item on the driveway.

Thoughts?  Anyone else doing/done this?

Have you updated your insurance for this arrangement?

Sure have, the roommate is listed as a driver.  Thanks, ixtap!

I'm the legal owner of 5 of the cars in our garage/yard.  I let my kids and wife drive them, so I guess it's car hacking.  I'm also allowed to drive one son's S2000 if I want.  So some hacking for a fun car there.  He's ordered a new STi, as a daily driver, so I'll be selling one of the cars and will get to drive the STi now and then.

Clearly, we're not doing this to reduce the cost or number of cars we own.  My son's been edging me to buy myself a fun car.  I've only looked online so far, but it's not out of the question.  Very non-mustachian, I know.
