I spent the better part of this weekend finally doing some serious canning. Saturday we went to a U pick farm and picked ~15 pounds of blackberries, blueberries and raspberries. Saturday night I made blackberry sorbet and a 3 berry bundt cake.
Sunday I spent nearly all day washing and sorting berries and making and canning jam: 8 half pints and 2 pints of blackberry, 4 half-pints of raspberry and 4 half-pints of triple berry. (10 pints=10 pounds, which just sounds more impressive to me.) ;-) There was a brief break in the middle to walk to the grocery store and buy more jars. I also made a quart of blackberry shrub syrup, froze another quart of blackberries, and finally, made a bean salad for our lunches for the week and sliced some veggies for our braindead hummus dinner.
And it must not have been too awful, because I'm getting 7.5 lbs of nectarine seconds, 3 pints of blueberry seconds, and 3 pints of cherry tomato seconds tomorrow from a local farm delivery. I know for some folks that's not much, but I live in the city and I'm quite proud of myself.

Good for you!
All those home-canned goodies make great holiday gifts or hostess gifts, too!

I've never done any serious volume before and always wondered how people could part with their hard-earned jams, etc. Now I look at 2 pints and 8 half pints of blackberry jam for the 2 of us and think "hmm, that could make a nice gift"!

Did you play "Jammin'" by Bob Marley while working? That seriously a lot of jam!

Ya, not sure my wife would approve... but homemade jam is very special, especially on toasted crumpets.

Homemade is the best! Most of my friends are hooked on meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) juice at the moment (uhm, not fruit juice but the kind of sugary concentrate you dilute with water. In England they called it squash, which confuses me because I think of zucchinis. Not sure if there is an American word for it?). I made my first, modest batch of 3L this summer. Hope Mr. Snow won't have finished it off before spring hits again!

I've only ever heard of lemon squash, which I think I get because you "squash" the lemons to make it. Maybe they just genericized the word (like lemonade; limeade; orangeade)?
