Bulk spices ftw
« on: January 15, 2025, 03:36:29 PM »
Having depleted my spice shelf through Christmas cooking and baking, I replenished today at the local co-op, for a total of $9.21. When I got home, just for fun, I put the same spices into the online shopping cart of my local grocery store, choosing the cheapest one each time--though mind you, the jars at the grocery store are smaller than mine. Grocery store total? $41.05. In some cases, the price per ounce at the grocery store is equal to the price per pound at the co-op.

Yeah . . . we discovered a couple Indian grocery stores around here after moving into the area more than ten years ago.  It turns out that Indian also people pay the same amount for an lb of spice that White people pay for an oz.  Blew my freaking mind.  (Makes sense when you consider the amount of spice used in Indian dishes though!)

:P

Yeah, for years I've bought spices in bulk, it's like $10 for a year's supply and I've typically used a TON of spices doing mostly plant-based cooking.

WinCo for the win if you're on the left coast of the US. Amazing bulk bins, terrific prices. They pay their employees well, too.

Nice what a score! This thread came at the perfect time because we just moved into a new house and had to throw away all our spices. I've bought a couple of spices already, but not nearly the amount we will need. I think there is a place around here where I can buy bulk spices so I'm going to look into this now- thanks.
