Borrowed Myself a Bike
« on: July 24, 2013, 11:33:29 AM »
I'm in the Bay Area for work for the next couple months. I've been scouring Craigslist for a reasonable used bike to get me around while I'm here but haven't found anything nearby (I'm not driving to San Jose to pick up a bike) that hasn't already sold by the time I get to it. I mentioned my bike search to a friend and he said I could have his since he never uses it. I'm not really sure this qualifies as "badassity" but I'm feeling exceptionally mustachian today and thought I would share.

I think this is the highest form of badassity. Full utilization of resources, avoidance of spending any money at all. I'm completely open to sharing/letting friends borrow my stuff. It just seems like most people think it is below them to borrow. Or that they're afraid they will break it (which I wouldn't care about, since that's a risk you take when you use your stuff).

I did the same thing when I discovered MMM when I lived in Germany. My friend didn't use his mountain bike, so I borrowed it to bike to work for a couple months until I left. Great success!

Ive just borrowed a bike too! Well my husband's friend has kind of given it to me, but I kind of feel I should give him something for it but I dont think he would accept it, maybe just a nice invitation to a dinner at our place will do the job.

Anyhow in my second week of commuting to work by bike, its about 14km round trip. I really look forward to it every day (30 mins to work, 35 on the way home) except for the extremely steep hill outside my house that I will have to build my stamina for.

awesome! borrowing is very mustachian. sort of try before you buy i guess, when you move again you'll know that you can bike but won't have spent any money finding this out.
last time i was at my parents i found an old rucksack and asked to take it. i knew there'd be one somewhere unused and just in need of a cleaning. now i use it lots when biking.
