Mustachian Groceries?
« on: October 12, 2016, 08:08:13 AM »
Went out behind the house last evening and arrowed a nice fat whitetail doe just before dark.   Had it dressed, skinned and hanging in a cooler within a couple hours.   Will allow it to hang a few days, then process it all myself yielding 40-50# of high quality, lean, boneless venison steaks, roasts & burger.   Arrow wasn't damaged, so just sharpen the broadhead and it can be reused.  No license purchased since hunting my own ground.   Only money out of pocket will be $10 or so worth of vac seal bags.   Hope to put 2-3 more in the freezer this season.   We eat quite a bit of venison.

Venison is great food, nice job.  What state do you live in that doesn't require a license even on your own land?

Indiana, landowner exemption.
Still have to check them in, but don't have to buy a license.

Same here, Fishindude. 39 years old and have never bought an ounce of beef from the grocery store. It's all venison and fish from the creek for us.

HAPPYINAZ, Tennessee is like Indiana. Landowners don't need a license but have to check the deer in after the kill.

Georgia also doesn't require landowners to have a license to hunt their own property. I don't live there any more, but if I was supposed to check the deer, I wasn't aware of it. Oops.

Nice job, Fishindude.

NICE.

We don't hunt but we have land in the country... Instead of $ for hunting there, we have an agreement with a neighbor that he can use our land for hunting in exchange for some meat. He takes his kids out (and has licenses, etc for all of them) and has a grand time, and I get to not go into the woods at 5am while pregnant out to there AND get good fresh meat AND not futz around with listing 100$ income on taxes.

Nice work Fishin!  Couple more weekends for me, and I'm eager.  Ran out of venison in May... Yikes.

Brought elk chili in to the office yesterday, trying to use up the remains from last season, before the new stuff starts accumulating.

I just need a sign that reads "All nighttime deer trespassers shall await for morning 'inspection'."

lots of critters on the game camera at 3am.

seriously any advice for getting deer out during the day is appreciated.

Have you ever tried bottled venison?  It's my favorite way to preserve deer meat.  So tender, tasty , and quick to fix with fried potatoes and a vegetable.

Not to be stereotypical, but deer are horrible readers.

And what the holy fuck is bottled venison?

I'm guessing bottled venison is pressure canned venison.  It's pretty good (I haven't canned it myself, but have canned chicken, so know the basic process).  Some of the hunters I know will can the meat in the freezer to make more room for fresh meat.

I don't hunt, but I have 9 acres and would love to have an agreement with someone that they can hunt there if they share some of the meat!  Our beef is all raised by my niece and brother, but I pay them for that.

We hunt every year. No private land, so on public here in Colorado. This year I harvested a nice bull elk in archery season, which was 305 lbs deboned, ground, and packaged. Then in rifle season I got a cow. Another 220 lbs in the freezer.

The whole family hunts (mom, dad, brother, me) Licenses are $46 each, and we bought 2 each (the max, couldn't get dear licenses this year, need preference points). Supplies were minimal this year, only thing I bought were socks and a new pair of shoes...

Unfortunatly we are accumulating meat faster than we can eat it. We still have 1 full freezer from last year. Plus a partial, and now a 3rd. With all the traveling my brother and I do... We eat a lot of canned elk and dear.

We have canned hamburger, sausage, stew meat, meatloaf, heart, and whole chunks. My favorite is whole chunks, open a can, chop it up, add onions and green peppers, add BBQ sauce... Simmer and it is great on sandwiches. A lot like pulled beef BBQ... Mmmmm

I think it's a bit wasteful to shot one if you have enough in the freezer already...
Can you find someone to barter with you for something else that you need? I'm sure that there are a lot of people who would do that who do not enjoy hunting.
Personally, I'd do it if I could get someone to shoot me one I'd clean it and process it. I just don't like sitting in a cold stand all alone and having to be still (ADD here...) that long. I'm not a fisherman either, but I love me some fish.

Side note: Anyone in MN who has extra walleye (processed or not) that they want to barter for rabbit, chicken or duck eggs PM me.

Anyone have luck so far this year?

Our family went archery hunting in September and rifle hunting in October. It was a tough year, but with a few days left in the last season we could hunt, I got a small bull elk. Success on public land here in Colorado is about 15%. So some years we don't get anything...

About the comment I am being wasteful... We aren't always successful in getting one. So this way we have enough to last through the year. Plus, it is a felony to sell, barter, or trade the edible parts of big game (at least here in Colorado).

No luck here this year. 16 year old had a deer hunt and an elk hunt and didn't get either - didn't even see any deer. Elk - saw a few but they were too far away to get (he's a good shot - gotten 1 each of the last two years at 300 yds).

Oldest son has an oryx hunt in Dec when he's home from college. Hopefully we'll get some meat then.

Really wanting some this year. Lost half of last year's elk when our housing area was evacuated for a forest fire in June. They turned off all power and everyone lost all their frozen/fridge food. Sad day when we had to drive all that to the dump! Live in town now so that is much less likely to happen. But the weather is much to warm here this year - no heat on yet, most days my kids are outside in light jackets - so the animals aren't coming to their normal areas.
