way to go!

2015, sold house and moved from HCOL to LCOL
2015-2018--built house in LCOL
2018-Sold  clown car, later in 2018 sold other clown car, then moved to Europe, bought a diesel van with cash which we only use for longer car trips and larger grocery trips.  Now I bike 2.4 miles each way to work and walk my kids about a mile to school.  We fill up our van about once every 6 weeks or less.  Nothing like passing vehicles stopped at a light when you're riding your bike.  One couple from our kids' school has two cargo bikes that they ride everywhere with 2-3 kids on the front at any given time.  Never seen them in a motor vehicle once.

Congrats!

How far is your bike commute?  I just got a new bike and have been toying with the idea of biking to work.  It would be about 8 miles one-way and as embarrassing as it is, I'm not sure if I could pull that off daily.  Plus I'm pretty bike ignorant in terms of fixing a flat so I'll have to get the tube and do a few test fixes in my garage haha.

8 miles is a sweet distance, you can do it. Start out two or three times a week and work up to more often (if you want). Sometimes people at work ask me about biking and they say, I would die if I had to do that. Never sure what they imagine happening to themselves. Sit down on your bike and move your feet in little circles. If it gets hard, change gears until its easy again. Stop when you get where you wanted to go.

Definitely stealing this for when anyone mentions how hard biking is.

8 miles sounds further than it feels.  I have a 15 mile round trip bike commute as well, and when I first started doing it I just figured I'll get there when I get there. I'm not going to push myself and try to break a land speed record, so I left at 8 with a goal of being there before 9.  A pace a bit above leisurely, and a few weeks later I'd gotten in good enough shape to be keeping up with or passing most other bike traffic and pedal the whole route in the fastest gear.

Some mornings I'm more tired than others, and I go nice and slow.  Even at a 10.5 MPH avg if I'm hungover or something (pretty slow on a roadbike) the whole thing takes only 40 minutes.

I biked to work 5 days/week for two spring semesters (Jan-April). The commute was 4.5 miles each way. It was South Florida and I only did it in the spring semester when I was cooler.

The biggest objective from people was, "what do you do, when it rains?" My reply was, "I get wet." Then I followed it up with, "I have an extra set of clothes in my office for that." I did get drenched a couple times. However, it was nice to know that it wasn't really that bad.

If I was super skilled, I would also ride my bike in the fall semester (August - December). However, that would require a shower when I got to work and thus I would have to leave the house 30-40 minutes earlier. The showers were a 10 minute walk across campus from my office.  I didn't want to sacrifice the 30 minutes of sleep, so I drove in fall semester.

Pretty awesome.  Good job!

No mortgage should also equal tons and tons of investing.
