Big commitment to FI today :D
« on: April 26, 2014, 03:34:26 AM »
Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share a personal success when it comes to cutting down on monthly expenses, excessive wants etc. I have finally cancelled Sky TV (UK Cable) - $80 and my BT Inifinity fibre optic broadband (76MB) after switched to another non fibre broadband provider that's still unlimited - saved $36

Total monthly savings - $116

This is quite a step forward on the path of FI as it shows my commitment to it, not only to FI but I am on a path of less is more and savouring what I do have. There is a complete abundance of tv material available for free and as part of the british tv license that we pay yearly. I simply don't need all those extra channels at all. It was in part a hard decision as it's easy to feel like I am loosing something, giving something up, limiting myself etc. Those kinds of feelings came up before but this morning I was in the mood to cancel :).

As for the broadband, my speeds will drop from 76MB to 16MB but to be honest the only real reason I had such fast speeds was from my old piracy days which I simply no longer do. There will be no bottleneck in steaming files, browsing websites. I will simply have to wait a little longer when downloading big files which is far less frequent an activity I do anyway. I spend most my time on my ipad.

I feel a bit more free and light not having those extra expenses there. I will however be funnelling that extra money into more discretionary spending so that my FI journey does not make me feel as limited as I currently do with regard to experience pursuits and living/fun money. That in essence ensures my FI fund will be consistently updated every month by 50% of my salary and I will not feel like I am sacrificing day to day activities which is a nice feeling - much better than simply having more channels and a faster speed of download.

Chris

Sky would not let me go easily, but they could not offer me what I wanted which was $0. It took 45minutes to get cancelled, they were constantly trying to convince me to stay, asking personal questions etc such as:

- what would you do if you didn't have sky tv?
- I think you are limiting yourself by leaving, you will most likely regret it but I understand
- You have Been loyal for 12 years, you will not get the same offer if you leave and come back
- but don't you like coming home after a hard day of work and watching some if the tv channels, the premium shows
- it would be a shame to lose all that content that you have

I was really annoyed with them, but feel a lightness feeling since doing so...

Congrats on limiting your cable and internet expenses.  That's an important step in the path toward FI.

There's nothing worse than a service company that gives you a hard time for wanting to cancel.  I remember many years ago, I wanted to cancel my internet service because I was able to get free dial up with my school.  The representative on the phone actually refused to oblige!  I had to call back and get a different representative that didn't give me a hard time.  It's amazing what some companies do to retain business.

16 MBPS is what we get out here on a good day without upgrading to business class.

When we fixed our house's coax cable TV connection, then found the problem with our DSL line and switched our ISP back to cable, our bandwidth jumped from 1.7 MBPS to 16 MBPS.  I'm still smiling about our ~10x speed boost...

I find their responses kind of hilarious. They were trying to get you to have an emotional reaction to canceling a service. Poor dears, they took the breakup rather hard!
