Baking, biking and savings
« on: September 28, 2016, 07:34:59 AM »
Time to brag. Last month we spent $650 on groceries and $350 eating out. I was disappointed to see that this month we spend $620 on groceries. Not the huge dip I was expecting. BUT the eating out bill dropped by $200!! Woohoo!! So in reality I did buy less expensive grocery items, but I needed more of the cheap stuff because we didn't eat out so much!

I also want to brag because I made bread for the first time this week from a bread machine I scavenged from my parent's basement. The first loaf was way too tough. But the second loaf was just about perfect! More savings! And the machine is so easy to use! Woot!!

I also started to hydroponicly grow scallions and lettuce. It'svery easy to do! This won't be a huge savings but it will make a difference. Especially because organic lettuce can be expensive.

I also biked to work for the first time today. I've been  taking the subway to work and then taking a bike share home. I didn't want to be sweaty at work. But now it's cool enough for me to bike to work. I'll save $2.50/day.

Finally, I sent out a rather clever tweet (at least I thought so) during the debate and it was printed in my local newspaper! It has nothing to do with MMM but I wanted to brag lol.

I feel like a badass 👿

YOU are a Badass biking in NYC. Kudos. Care to elaborate on the hydroponic lettuce set up?

It was a failed attempt experiment. I was attempting to grow lettuce from a hydroponic grower I made from a mason jar. Didn't work.

I give you points for trying with the lettuce! I'm pretty sure growing sprouts (alfalfa, bean, maybe pea shoots) is easy to do in a jar; you could look that up online. They are good on sandwiches or added to salads. As a teenager I used to like crunchy toast with peanut butter and alfalfa sprouts. In any case, congrats on your accomplishments so far!

Major points for all of that--especially the lettuce. =-)

I was looking into growing lettuce from the stem like this:

That is exactly what I tried to do. Didn't quite work for whatever reason

Got my wife to walk to the store with me this weekend.  She is very un-confident on a bike and not appreciating my attempts to "help" on that front, so I put the third wheel jogging attachment on the bike trailer, tossed in the kid, and off we went.  It is a 1.8 mile walk to the store, and it rained on the way back, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.  My wife didn't even leave me afterwards!  I wish there was a better route, as the direct path is on a major street with lots of road noise.

At 4 years of age our kid enjoys activity, but can't handle near enough for us to get enough exercise playing along with him, and often we just end up with back pain from working down at his level.  So we have to resort to things like this, or in my case biking 9 miles each way to the zoo so he can run around there for his exercise.
