Badassity to the Max (not mine though)
« on: June 11, 2013, 09:42:08 AM »
I poked around to see if this has been posted yet and could not find it.  So:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/duke-grad-student-secretly-lived-in-a-van-to-escape-loan-debt-194021112.html

What an eye opener!  What a drive (not literally, but his desire to go debt free)!  What an experience he takes with him from here!

I went ahead and purchased the book for my Kindle (not bad at $3.99).  Just opened it up an the first page says "Ten percent of all royalties will be donated to The Wilderness Society, and advocate and protector of America's wild places."

I am writing this because I think it is awesome that someone who could probably use the cash from the book decides to donate 10%!

I am looking forward to the read.

That is extremely extreme! He'll have complete financial freedom and great stories to share for life now.

Badass to the gills.

Half the comments are complaintypants who would first cry about injustice, politicians, and illlegals before coming up with an actionable plan. Bravo to this kid, hope he makes it big somewhere.

Just finished Ken's book Walden on Wheels - excellent.  I applaud his ability to get out of student debt yet more so, not get into it again.  It is a good story especially for young people heading to college - think carefully before you borrow. Yes, the living in a van part - uplifting considering his mission to stay out of college debt.  I also really enjoyed his travel stories that enabled him to find other parts of himself.  Strong, with conviction, a great read.

A little over half way through myself (in his travels now).  Very insightful for his age.  Lots of good things in there for everyone.  I am contemplating allowing my daughters to read it, but in a few places it is inappropriate for their ages.  However, the lesson is priceless.    And its funny!

I just finished Walden on Wheels and enjoyed it. It was funny and insightful.  It is not something I am ready to allow my daughters to read since it has a couple of pretty sexually explicit parts, as they may be ready for that in a few years but not now.  However, the part I really think would benefit them is how he looks at his debt.  He doesn't think it is normal to have it, especially his student loans, as most other students take them out quite often.  He does over-simplify things a bit (generalizes), but he does bring a different point of view.  His views are not "normal," but I think they should be.

He also has some spot-on observations and comments about being outdoors, and what we think is and isn't important in this life.

Anyway, I recommend it as a good read.

Oh, cool.  I was reading through the article and looking at the pictures when suddenly I thought "I saw this guy before!".  Same guy who walked the pipeline. :)
