Avoided Doctor Visit and Antibiotics!
« on: July 26, 2016, 08:26:36 AM »
I'm a woman, and have gotten several  UTIs over the years, despite my best efforts.

Started getting the symptoms last week of another infection.  Decided to wait a few days before going to the doc, and tried the following:

-Thoroughly cleaning 2-3x/day with extra mild soap
- Upping water intake to 5L/day from 3L
- Cutting almost all carbs out of diet
- Taking large daily doses of vitamin C (normally taken in winter to avoid colds, but has helped skin infections too, so gave it a try)

3 days later, all symptoms were gone!  Of course, maybe it wasn't an infection, but still saved a doctor visit.

Note:  Never had serious symptoms like a fever or bleeding.  I only tried this due to the relatively low risk and lots of experience with this condition.

Cutting all carbs out of your diet is a pretty unhealthy thing to do.  Fruit, vegetables, and legumes are all good things to eat regularly.

Cranberry juice is very good for UTIs.  Try that next time as well.

There's an over the counter product called D-Mannose that can stop a mild UTI, depending on what is causing it. It works by attracting the bacteria to it, and then passing with the urine taking the bacteria out with it.  It works in hours and worth a try if you are prone to UTI.

Speaking as a nurse, if it really was a UTI, it must have been a mild one, and the only thing you did that would have directly helped it was drinking plenty of fluids.

D-Mannose is recommended by lots of doctors....you might get some and take it next time you think something is coming on.  I have used cranberry pills to good effect too.  If you keep having UTI's it's likely you need a different antibiotic.  I had several years with recurrent infection.  they prescribe antibiotics and it would go away, but then months later it would come back.  I think what finally got rid of it was when I went into hospital for gall bladder surgery and they gave me strong antibiotics.  Haven't had UTI since and that was decade or more ago.  I wish I had the name of the antibiotic that gave me....it was through an IV.

When I feel one coming on, I gulp down lots of water with a little baking soda. Gross - but so worth avoiding a full-on infection and dr$ visit. Note: You have to measure the baking soda carefully….too much can be very bad for you!

I am a doctor and also get recurrent UTIs

I use D mannose. It is a sugar that goes into the bladder and binds to e coli and helps flush it out of the bladder. I also do unsweetened cranberry juice and tons of water. If it is just the beginning of symptoms I can sometimes get to to go away.

I also have a standing order for an antibiotic that I take after sex, prophylactically.

I used to have frequent UTIs. Now I put a cup of vinegar in my bathwater and use organic coconut oil as a vaginal lubricant. Have not had a UTI in 3 years.
