Average monthly spending dropped by 72%
« on: October 03, 2012, 11:59:24 AM »
From an average of just below $2400 (based on last years monthly average) to just above $650 (last 3 months average). Everything is getting dumped into savings.

We're down 3.5 months into this process, me and the wify. This does not include her numbers. I will be doing a more thorough set of numbers at 6 months. I was just really thrilled and wanted to share my victory in badassity.

I'm certain the support here has helped and y'all should share a little in the glory.
Peace

That is awesome, what were your biggest savings on? I'd guess a housing change and transportation change...

Awesome.

Did you pay off a mortgage or move in with family or something, making housing drop out of the equation?
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

This doesn't include the wife's spending and i realized after posting, it doesn't include $1200 in uncleared check for wedding venue (the big event was last weekend). That being a one time expense i'm letting it slide. ;o)

Costs are all monthly...and i'm limiting it to what i spend and have saved on.
Rent-No change
Food-$400-20: The wife now covers all the food and we've stopped eating out, but maybe once or twice a month. In just lunches at work i've stopped $100 in spending.
Gas and car costs from $100-20: Hypermiling and biking to work
Medical Marijuana $250-120: Switching to a vaperizer and shifting my purchase frequency for additional discounts.
(i'm totally self conscious of this expense around here. I have chronic stomach issues. Please be gentle with punching)
Charity $100-0: I've stopped adding to our charity contributions for now, until we know if we're getting the house (sorry NPR)
Therapy $120-0: Stopped going. Haven't lost my mind yet.
Phone-no change
Not going to burning man saved me about $800 per month when averaged over the summer VS last years cost (No really, $2400 to go to a party as a staff member and builder *facepunch*).
Not going to parties, camp outs, and drink ups...Not even sure how to do the math here, but we say "no, saving for house and a baby. We can't make it this time." A LOT.
There's also a crap-ton of transactions for things like massages, clothing, sporting goods and uncategorized ATM withdraws that are distant history.

For these items i feel like i should clarify. I'd been digging my way out of $30k of debt that started on 2006 and ended in July of last year. The very expensive vacation choice and other posh amenities were a well deserved celebration. Until our housing situation changed i was totally unfocused post debt.

I feel blessed to have found this space with so much more to learn about...I thought i was doing really well before. LOL If i were looking at those same numbers now with what i've learned, it'd be closer to 6 mo VS 5 years. :)
