Achieved walking to work
« on: March 06, 2022, 10:21:55 AM »
Planning a life with minimizing commute and general driving in mind really does work.  We moved to a new city a couple years go, and purposely bought a place that was quite walkable/bikeable.  We can walk to school, groceries and shopping, library, parks, doctors office.  The only essential thing I couldn’t walk to was work, which was about 30 minutes away.  However, there is a branch about a 10  minute walk away, and my plan was to eventually transfer there if I could.  I let my work know I wanted that, and after a year and 7 months of commuting at this job, I finally got the okay to transfer!  It is a nice 10 minute walk through a park, and I am thrilled.

That's awesome!  Sounds like a great way to decompress on your way home

Congratulations.

As much as I like biking to work, walking is even better.

Congratulations! DH has walked to work since we bought this house nine years ago. It's only about two tenths of a mile in his case, but it's up a good hill. He even gets a stipend from his company for not driving. His friends used to offer him a ride, which he never accepted because he enjoys the walk.

Nice job! I used to walk to work every day and never regretted moving to where that was possible.

Great!  I have a 40 minute walk each way to and from work and it's a great way to exercise without any real effort and also decompress on the mornings/evenings. I really missed it while I worked from home.  I listed to podcasts while I walk or call various family members.

Hooray! This is a HUGE bump to one's quality of life. I start work kind of crazy-early, so I take the bus (about a 10 min ride) in the morning and then walk home (45 min). I used to drive and then we got rid of one car during the pandemic. I am SO much happier now that I don't have that driving commute. The walk home is such a good "off ramp" at the end of the day.

Very nice. We practically live in the business park that DH works in, which itself is next to a nature preserve. Our townhouse development is the only residential for miles around, which unfortunately means we drive to most other things. Especially silly since DH hasn't been into the office more than 10 times in the last two years, but we did have the whole business park as our personal veloway for the lockdown periods...
