A shoutout to my little sister! - "New" Car!
« on: May 20, 2014, 09:47:11 AM »
I just wanted to share my good news about successfully sharing Mr. Money Mustache advice and someone actually listening!  It's so crazy how people come up with all the reasons why they can't take his advice and must spend ridiculous amounts of money.  My sister was in the need for a new car b/c she got a job but she was trying to keep the price at what she had gotten in insurance for her last car (car accident) so she was getting all kinds of advice and she was trying so hard to not have a car note especially since she lives in the city and only needs the car for her 8 mile hike to work.   I sent her that article about the best cars to buy and she bought one on the list!  I was so happy!   This is the same person who gave me a lot of BS about why she couldn't leave the major cell phone companies so I did not have high hopes that she would listen but she did!  Her car was at 2008, has like 91k miles on it and it was $1,000 bucks less than her settlement so she actually got to keep some of that money.  And best part - No car note!!  Yay!  So happy!  Sometimes people listen!  Incredible!  Happy Tuesday you guys!

It's only a win if she doesn't spend the savings, right?

I think the point was that she could have dug herself into a hole with a new car.  She didn't and she has a bit of a ladder out of debt/to financial freedom.  Now if she spends her ladder, at least she's not behind from this situation so for non-mustachian, I'd still call it a win in that situation.

No - that's a bonus- it's a when every month that she's not tied to a car loan - if she lost her job tomorrow - that car is still hers!  But - you are right  - she should save the amount she was going to have to pay per month in a car loan.  Of course she was never planning on having a loan in the first place.  :)

You know what - She didn't listen to me on the cell phone - gave me a lot of nonsense about contracts and stuff that didn't matter and I did the "silent" I'm disappointed thing and then I dropped it.  Then a few months later when she got her new job she called me to talk about this new apartment my mom had talked her into which was basically going to wipe out the "increase" she got in the new job so I took that opportunity to say "if you do this then you've got to look at all the other things in your life that could cost you money on a monthly basis and cut it down!"  and I mentioned the car and so then when she was looking for a used car and panicking b/c it was close to the date when she needed it for work, I simply forwarded her that article and said, "make it easy! just pick from his list!"  ..............and it worked.  :)   Miracle, I'm telling you - miracle.
