5 Cakes of Ivory Soap = One gallon Ivory Liquid Soap
« on: January 20, 2015, 05:18:45 PM »
I don't recommend the work but if you have unused cake soap it can be turned into liquid soap.   I found 5 cakes grated and cooked in hot water until it dissolves makes about 1 gallon of liquid soap.   The soap stays quite watery until the final room temperature is reached.   That's when you find out it is too thick.

My soap has some leather sheds in it (rather than skin) since I used gloves to finish off the soap cakes.

A side benefit is a very clean pot.

This is hilariously and amazingly mustachian. +1. It had never even occurred to me to do this.

Way to go!

Another soap hack is to refill a foaming handsoap dispenser with about 1:10 castille soap (I like dr bronners eucalyptus, my partner likes lavender) and water. A 32oz bottle of castille soap will last three years or more!

I only did it because we have not used bar soap for years, and  10 cakes were sitting unused in the laundry room.   I suppose they originally cost a third of what the liquid soap costs now.

How does the cost of bar soap compare to liquid? What are you saving?

Tip for the future with Ivory soap: microwave a bar for 90 seconds instead of taking the effort to shred it. Once it cools, you can just crumble the foam with your hands. The tip works well for making powdered laundry detergent, too. It only works for Ivory, though, because of the air they whip into the bars.

Standard size of liquid soap seems to be about 12 oz.  5 bars makes one gallon or 128 oz.  So you could get 10 bottles of liquid soap or 5 bars of soap.  So long as bar soap is less than twice the cost of a 12 oz. liquid soap you're saving money by comparison.  This pretty generally true - pretty sure that a 10-pack of the bar soap I use is less than $5, so $.50 / bar or $.25 / homemade liquid soap bottle.  Compare to maybe $1 for a 12 oz. bottle of liquid soap.

Yay soap!! I just made my first batch of home made soap with lye (sodium hydroxide) and olive oil. It's surprising easy!! I'm gonna try this with my bars of soap and add a few drops of lime oil and try it as a liquid body wash

Careful about the shelf life of the liquid product... I have a vague feeling you need to add more glycerin into it (or something) to make it a bit more shelf stable. To the Google! :)
