2013 Savings Rates
« on: December 19, 2013, 07:10:18 AM »
Post them if you got them...

J - 31%
F - 40%
M - 44%
A - 41%
M - 43%
J - 11%
J - 18%
A - 37%
S - 49%
O - 42%
N - 60%
D - 54%

In June I paid air and board for a trip I took in July.  Was a great trip and a once in a blue moon type thing so while it drove down my rates it was still worth it.

All of the above include mortgage principal, however if you take 6% off any month the rest is cash/investments.

Let's see everyone's hard work from flexing their frugal muscle all year!

I don't figure it on a month-by-month basis, but 2013 overall at the moment is at 61%.  If I receive any Christmas money it is going to the mortgage, so it may go up a percentage point or so.

How do you already know December? It isn't over yet!  ;)

Since I stopped caring so much about personal finance, I only update stuff every few months, looks like through October is the latest I have.

January: 84.62%
February: 87.24%
March: 87.33%
April: -6.63%
May: 82.48%
June: 80.73%
July: 85.88%
August: 80.60%
September: 90.00%
October: 78.22%
November: 73.48%
December: 83.95%

Generally in the 80s, except for April, which was the first month where my outgoing was more than my incoming (i.e. negative savings rate), due to a giant tax bill.

Spreadsheet say overall savings rate for 2013 was 77.21%.

If I remember I'll come back and edit and update this post in January with the final end of year information.

EDIT: I remembered and added November and December and updated the overall savings rate on 2/12/14.  Bolded the above info that was changed/added.

How is this calculated?  Is it as simple as savings versus net pay or is there more to it?  I would like to start figuring this out to compare each month and now to this time next year.

There are many, many threads on how to calculate savings rate, let's not pull this one off topic.

This should help you get started:

70% for 2013. Based on my approximated tax refund expected in the spring.

Here are mine.  Based on post tax numbers.  Includes dividends on income side and investment costs on the spending side, so each month %savings/interest%/expenditure%

J 34/26/40
F 50/24/26
M 66/22/12
A 28/23/49
M 15/26/58
J 48/27/24
J 38/17/44
A 57/19/23
S 75/16/9
O 47/11/42
N 37/26/37
D 78/13/9

Totals for year: $101k/40k/60k or 50%/20%/30%.  Expenses included travelling for 3.5 months, $4.5k in one of costs for structuring financial affairs and $4.7k to power my house with solar (now energy neutral).  Plenty of fat that can be reduced to bolster the savings rate.

Donation to Australia (total tax paid) = $68,200, or 113% of what I spent on my own consumption.

Rather than trying to save as much as I can, I have a fixed monthly savings target. As long as I hit that mark, I'm ok with spending the rest. This year, I finally closed my financial commitments to my parents. Since then, my target has been to put away $4,000 every month into my savings.

I'm happy to say that I've met my targets this year :-) :-) :-)

Am I badass?

I think it is useful to have income figures here.  Saving 50% of 50K is different than saving 80% of 125K, but both situations have spending of $25K/year and savings of the balance.  My family of 4's annual post-tax income is about 80K (1 working parent, one SAH parent)

Jan-13   16%   (filled the oil tank, so glad to have lower cost gas this season!)
Feb-13   56%
Mar-13   52%
Apr-13   44%
May-13   58%
Jun-13   53%
Jul-13   53%
Aug-13   48%
Sep-13   53%
Oct-13   40%
Nov-13   47%

for the year I'm looking at 47%

We're at roughly 66.7%.

Very happy with our spending and earning this year. It doesn't hurt that the markets have been pretty kind as well.

I think all of you are doing amazing, as of a few years ago, I think the average American family saved a -2%  so wow!!

I have no idea what our rate was, we are still fixing up this house we are in to sell later, so it's hard to tell, not near as good as you guys, but we will get there sooner than later.

Jan - 37%
Feb - 33%
Mar - 28%
Apr - 74% (No rent this month, as our deposit from last year covered it)
May - 42%
Jun - (03)% (Paid travel costs for a three-week vacation for two in August)
Jul - 27%
Aug - 14%
Sep - 42%
Oct - 49%
Nov - 49%

Overall it looks like we're going to hit ~35% after-tax savings rate for the year on an net income of $54k. If I count the tax refund I expect to receive, we will be up to about 39%. Net worth should be up about 25k.

I'm pretty happy with this as my first full year of Mustachianism! Obviously we could be more hardcore, but given that my fiancee is still in school and working part-time making minimum wage, our savings rate should increase rapidly in a few years once we're both in the workforce full time!

Slightly off topic, but I calculated my savings rate relative to my salary per year since 1999:

Salary    %spent
59,909    28%
59,686    33%
74,871    28%
75,409    28%
77,224    32%
77,266    30%
90,000    44% - left my cheap rent-controlled apartment and bought a condo
89,200    44%
93,258    41%
96,726    43%
96,529    43%
96,206    41%
103,626  36%
105,417  37%
108,568  37%

I found it very cheering to realize I had always been able to live on less than 50% of my salary!

Very badass, though I wonder what was going on in April.

I clearly have a long way to improve.  And I need to actually track my expenditures better.

This year was my first year out of college, first career job, and first year of marriage: 67% savings rate.

We're off to a good start!

Edit: Per catccc, our household income is $96k pre-tax, not sure about post-tax this year yet... $68k, I think?
