"World Car Free Day" Rode my bike to work!
« on: September 22, 2015, 06:00:54 AM »
I pulled the trigger and rode my bike to work today.

I have been hesitant in the past, the roads around here are very unfriendly to cyclists, year after year we get rated as one of the unsafest counties to cycle in.

It wasn't all that bad, aside from cars wizzing by 60+ mph.

The ride was 9.3 miles and took 35 minutes.

congrats!  Do you plan on continuing to bike to work?
I found it takes a week or two for the habit to kick in.  Around the second week everything became automatic, and i started noticing some physical benefits to the exercise.  Now I hate taking the bus on the occasional days when it is necessary.

also - didn't realize it was "world car free day" - good thing I rode my bike anyway!

I will try to do so at least once a week till it gets really cold out. As I mentioned in the OP, the roads here are really not too safe for bicycle commuting, I had to carefully plan out the route I knew that had the widest shoulder. It wasn't bad at all.

Is there any possibility at all of working out an alt route?
My roads are tremendously shitty for cycling too, so much so that I *will not* ride the route I normally drive - there's no shoulder at all, and cars/trucks go 50-60mph. However, through dedicated scouting, I've managed to work out a torturous path through the backroads (some offroad riding required) that I can theoretically do in 45 minutes or so.
Of course, ever since then, every time I get all motivated to try the whole ride at once, I get sick or hurt. No whining, genuinely shitty luck. It's bizarre.
This week would be a good time to make that happen....

2Birds1Stone, Congratulations.  Finding a decent route is no small thing. I've heard of the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives... are they in your area?  Perhaps they can help.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
