$8 haircut
« on: October 27, 2016, 12:17:24 PM »
Haircuts in NYC for men typically range from $16 (very cheap) to $50 (I'm not kidding). I've been getting the $16 cuts but yesterday I took a risk and got an $8 haircut in Chinatown from a guy who barely spoke English.

It's not bad either! Not as good as my $16 cut, but I'll take the extra $8!

(Btw I know it would be cheaper to cut my own hair. I did that for years but I never got good at it and my hair always looked like junk. Now that I'm a professional, I want a better cut)

Bought a trimmed for $30 at Costco about 6 years ago (when the last one fell apart).  Trims the beard and the hair weekly for an average of $0.10 per trim.

The dogs and I all use a pricey $120 trimmer.  (One of the dogs has really thick hair that will eat other trimmers alive).  But over the years, I think we're down to $8 or less when you spread the cost out.

Good for you. I think we can often realize savings in our lives by venturing into unfamiliar territory -- shopping at ethnic grocery stores, trying the mom and pop restaurant in the ethnic neighborhood, riding the bus even though no one in our family/social circle ever rides the bus.

Yeah I definitely felt uncomfortable going into the shop but I told myself I only had to try it once. If it was a terrible cut I didn't ever have to go back.

Many years ago, one of the local hair cutting shops had a sign that said,
"We fix $6 haircuts",  It was aimed at another low cost hair cutter that advertised their
$6 haircuts.
That said, my wife has cut my hair for 20 years. Always good, well, this last time,
is a little odd :-)

This is about where I am.  My GF was a dog groomer at Petsmart for a few years, so she had bought similar equipment for that job and is still using it years later on our dogs and on my hair.  I haven't paid for a haircut since 2011.  My hairline's also steadily receded since about then, so it's become an easier job for her with time.  Eventually I'll probably end up with the low-maintenance Larry David look.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
