My rental properties are in Seattle and recently we were predicted to have historic rains and winds which nearly promised widespread power outage. I sent an email to all my tenants encouraging them to make preparations for days without power and to report any damage to me as soon as possible. Fortunately we didn't have power outages for long and there was no damage. But this situation got me thinking about emergency preparedness for my properties. I'd encourage all landlords to include in their tenant materials instructions for how to turn off the gas and water mains in the case of an emergency.
But on to my question, let's say that the big earthquake arrives or if you are in a hurricane region, imagine if that happens. Seattle just released a study that says citizens should plan to have at least two weeks of emergency supplies. What if my tenants are simply not prepared? Will they damage the property by doing truly dumb, desperate things during an extended emergency situation?
