will you help get this into your library?
« on: October 21, 2016, 08:29:00 AM »
Hi everyone,

The dream would be to get a copy of this book into every library in the US, Canada, NZ, Australia, UK, and Europe.

Would you be willing to ask your library to bring it in?

Some of us are hyper-familiar with our library's "purchase request" system ;)   For those who aren't, emailing the link to your library or printing the page and bringing it in to your local librarian should do the trick.

If your town has a work placement agency, student union, advocacy agency, women's agency, or community kitchen, ditto all of the above!

If you're willing to post here, PM me, or post a note anywhere on my blog (which you can do anonymously) as to which library or agency has got it in, I can offer that list on the blog so people can go grab it.

Thanks!!!!

Submitted the online request at my library. They confirmed the request went through, but I don't know what % of books they buy on request. :) I'll let you know if it comes to fruition!

Hi Scrubby,

I'm in.  I'll do what I can to get a copy into the Burnaby Public Library system - Tommy Douglas branch.

Let you know what comes of it.

I submitted a request to Settle Public Library system about 3 weeks ago. No news since, but there are quite a few Seattleonians on the forum. Maybe we can unite our strength, and convince The Powers That Be.

Hey HipGnosis (awesome name!),

Definitely only people that would like to see the book out there would take this action. Definitely no "should" for anyone :)

Why would it be great to do so, for those who are into it?
  • Provides access to folks who don't have the $8-$10 the cheapest version costs,
  • Increases visibility of the book's existence (to people browsing a library's physical shelves), to people it serves,
  • Helps people here make a great contribution to their local community at zero cost to them,
  • Helps me recover the few thousand I spent to produce it.
The book feels like my best effort at "contribution," at helping people with more struggles than most to recover financially, emotionally, etc. But, it does no good to anyone sitting in the warehouse, for sure :)

...they already have five copies, all of which are currently in circulation, with two pending holds!

Wait, what?!?!?!? Holy! :))    Thrilled about the circulation and holds! Thanks, King County!

Maybe we can get you down here to give a talk sometime!

On my drive to town, I had a big long fit of daydreaming meeting you at Camp Mustache next year. I was crying with happiness as I drove, lol. Maybe it was a premonition ;)

Also, on my drive home I was listening to NPR from "pacific northwest" or something??? Feeling increasingly connected...

Hugs in single parent solidarity, scrubs.  Can't wait until we are free to do things together on a whim.....

lol, YES! I am so grateful and happy to get to care for my kid every day, but happy for the understanding and solidarity too! I'm really happy with my life balance right now—nothing I feel I'm missing out on, etc—but I can easily recall the moments of argh in moments like you just had.

I have requested it for the library. I also plan to have a few copies for my business library, to pass out to people. And I mentioned your blog on FB today. Hopefully the word will get out more. Have you looked into doing a radio interview for a local station? I don't know how that works, but something to consider.

So many additional kind words too :)

Everyone's help on this item is deeply appreciated, that's for darn sure!

I suggested it to the Ottawa Public Library. I am, frankly, surprised they don't have it already and will be surprised if my suggestion is not heeded in this case. In fact, I think they should get multiple copies.

Do you have any other suggestions for the types of places that would benefit from having copies of this book? Homeless shelters? Battered women's shelters? Legal aid clinics? Anti-poverty NGOs?

Thanks very much, Dee!

All of the above, for sure. I'm going to come up with one type of place at a time, so it's not overwhelming for any of us participating, and propose each on the forum (and the book's blog, etc) as we go. The vast majority of places I originally emailed did not respond, so I am going to start snail mailing some national orgs, too.

On the website, I've created a page listing the places people can get it free: https://financialtipsforthebroke.com/free-copy/   I know it can take a while for any org to process a request, get a thing into its resource system, but I'm sure that page's list will grow :)

I made a request at my local library!  The website says they get so many requests that they won't be able to let me know if they decide to purchase it, but I'll check periodically to see if they add it.

Scrubby, I think this is a great idea going for putting the book into one type of place at a time.   I know I would feel overwhelmed if I had a bunch of places all at once to try to get the book into.   Keep us posted so we can help!

Any librarians here? What are their suppliers, such that some get can a given book in and some cannot? Not all libraries can order directly? Or?

Continued thanks to all of you!

Ideas Needed!

A member PMd me with an offer to have three copies drop-shipped to the charities of my suggestion! Thank you, Member I Assume Prefers to Stay Anonymous!

I have been thinking about this for two days, and am stuck, so crowdsourcing that here. I mean, I can think of countless places it would be fitting, but I would really want to see those three copies have the most impact possible.

Besides a public library, where do you believe a book gets most circulation?

I received a truly lovely reply from the library re: supplier issue.

Librarian named the supplier; I will look that up and aim to connect with it :)
Librarian also said Librarian did find the subject matter "compelling" and looked at the many positive reviews of the book.
...but that the budget [perhaps for those unavailable through the supplier?] does not allow for all requests.

That's fair enough, of course.

I really appreciated the conversation with Librarian, and I will seek to connect with the supplier, see if book can indeed land inside its realm.

...I would think your book would be put to good use in a shelter that has adequate supports for an active program for helping people get healthy/back on their feet after setbacks (leaving domestic abuse/recovery from addiction or mental health issues, etc).

YES! I have been involved (as client and volunteer) with an agency that supports women who've had a rough go. It offers a basic lifeskills program, full-time for several months. That would be a perfect fit. Like, the book available to women in this program would be wonderful, an excellent fit.

And, you touch on something important: Widest circulation isn't the most important. "Of most use" is. i.e., Better that one life change with one copy, than two hundred lives merely see it.

Maybe I will list Mary's Place Seattle as one of the three for sponsorship :)

I got a positive response from the Ottawa Public Library:
"We are pleased to inform you that the Ottawa Public Library will order the item you suggested. When it appears in the catalogue – usually within 1 week -- you will be able to place a hold."

I'm really impressed with the prompt and positive response!

Thanks for prompting us to do something so easy, Scrubbyfish!

Requested, with special emphasis on Canadianness. I'm sure they get extra dollars for buying Canadian. I should also send the request link to a friend of mine who might love it. Or maybe send her a copy at Christmas. I'm trying to figure out which friends will love a copy at Christmas, and which will feel insulted.

Oh, cool, LFG!! And thanks again :))    Adding it to the list on the website!

I don't know the rhyme or reason to what gets ordered where. I find most books I request ordered, and a very few not... And some systems automatically reserve the first copy for me, and others don't... And some tell me if a book will or will not be ordered, and some don't...

My current one is pretty low-tech, everything on the down-low ;)

Some of your guys' systems seem especially awesome!

I don't know how to pronounce that, but I like it!

Seriously, someone who has never seen that before, try to say that out loud, correctly, on the first try.  ...just me?  :)
