This is a not a recommendation. Might be useful to someone here.

We got the mail for a new car insurance, metromile.com. They charge a monthly rate plus miles driven.

It requires a device for your car.

We only have one car and we put 15K a year on it.

This does not make this a good deal for us but it might work for other people.

I'm not a fan of any tracking device on my car. Considering that I live in the metro Philly area, most highway miles are driven at speeds well above the revenue limit.

I have had Metromile for 2 years now and am very happy with it. We family drives around 3,000 miles per year and it saves us a little money, not a ton.

It has some cool (and optional) features that let you see the vehicle location via the app, like if you forget where you park. You can also login and see all the trips you made which is useful for logging tax-deductible business miles.

I think the pay-per-mile model is smart and incentivizes people to drive less.

Less valuable here in WA because the daily rate caps out at 250 miles per day instead of 150 in other states, otherwise I would be with them.

I drive very little, but when I do, it's usually right around 150-250 miles per day. Tragedy of the commons.

I will need to look into this. I probably drive no more than 20 miles per day unless I'm on a road trip. Is it that much cheaper than normal insurance? Do they jack up your rates if they catch you going over the speed limit or do abrupt braking?

Edit: looks like it's not available in my zip code.

Tj, you can and should get multiple quotes to compare.

No, metro mile does not monitor your driving habits at all. Some other insurance companies like Progressive offer that as a benefit to safe drivers. MM is different, it just cares about the number of miles per month.

Are you assuming that or has the co. said that in writing somewhere?
