Dancarlin.com hardcore history.    Very, very cool.

Same, Harcore History is just really REALLY good, + Tim Ferris, and BiggerPockets are probably my top 3. I like variety.

Just started listening to this while on the bus to/from work (Specifically the series on WWI 'Blueprint for Armageddon'). Very interesting! Some days I just keep my headphones in when I get home and keep on listening.

One of my favorites to pass the time while doing routine work is Clark Howard.

The Minimalists blog now also has a weekly podcast, though it doesn't touch on financial topics all the time.

If you commute to work by bike I recommend Pedal Hub. What sets it apart from other bike podcasts I've listened to is that it seems more aimed at commuters and casual riders over the racing crowd.

Thanks for all the feedback.  I am glad to see this post continues on.  I wanted to update.  I am currently listening to:

Freakanomics - usually perfect time wise
Planet Money - Sometimes have to listen to two in a day
Clark Howard - a little long for my liking.  Usually have to stop before the podcast is over.

Have really enjoyed the above.  Would like to find a few additional ones.

Great stuff!

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I've been recently enjoying BBC Women's Hour, a daily 45 minute program about women's issues as diverse as Menstrual Leave (!!) and global child care issues, to interviews with actresses and politicians alike.

I listened to that for a bit but got turned off when they tried to justify the one dude selling his paid off car to his roommate, whose car died, and financing a newer car. They had a follow up podcast that was basically a humble brag about his income IMO. He even referred to an $8K car as a beater. They were posted on 8/24/15 and 8/26/15.

Sounds like a niche waiting to be filled to me...
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

All previously mentioned and are great:

The Dirtbag Diaries
Criminal
Serial
TED Radio Hour

Not mentioned:
The Art of Manliness: He interviews a bunch or really interesting people on a wide variety of topics such as fitness, money, homesteading, and military service.

Podcast are great for improving and retaining foreign language skills.  I regularly listen to Spanish language podcasts to retain my Spanish comprehension.

HBR Podcast - Harvard Business Review
This is Your Life - Michael Hyatt

Anyone using the NPR one app?

I recently started listening.  . . So far it's neat, I can pick a show, listen to news, and then it will also just start playing new shows or podcasts from the vault.

I've found some really terrible podcasts on there as well. Ugh. Three young people talking about pop culture and like "what are you so totally about this week? "

I do a lot of walking throughout the day (sedentary desk job, so trying to mitigate some of that) and I'm always listening to podcasts.  Here's what I listen to:

  • You Are Not So Smart - Each podcast focuses on a different aspects of self-delusion.  Pretty amusing podcast and I usually learn something
  • Paleo Solution Podcast - I don't listen to this one all the time, but if the guest has researched or wrote about some aspect of public health or nutrition science that I'm interested in, I'll listen
  • The Pollsters - this one is great for me, who is too lazy to do much research on politics in general, and has a background in surveying/statistics
  • Bombcast - video game news
  • Chalk Talk Climbing Podcast - Cool interviews if you're into rock climbing
  • Mad Fientist - making my way through the archives of this one

If you enjoy science info type programs the website for 'Science360' has lots of podcasts, wide range of topics. I don't do the podcasts, yet! Maybe after I retire for the on the go convenience. I listen to Science360 on my internet radio.
I enjoy the three below, often a bit over my head, but very interesting and fun.
This Week in Microbiology
This Week in Virology
This Week in Parasitism

Science360 plays the podcasts over the internet, you may need to go to the website of
the podcast to download it.
Topics include Nasa, the universe, the mind, the brain, bacteria, birds, astronomy,
electronics, chemistry, engineering, environment, Earth, John Hopkins and much more.
Here's a page with a list of the 100+ shows on 'Science360'
https://science360.gov/radio/shows/
If your a science type there's plenty here to like.
Another thing I listen to are old time Radio Programs. Gunsmoke, The Six Shooter,
Dragnet, Philip Marlow, and much more, can't think of them all now.
Again, I listen to those on my internet radio, but podcasts are available.

NPR Politics - weekly summary of all USA political news surrounding the presidential election

Motley Fool Money - talks about what's going on in the market, what companies beat or didn't beat earnings, stocks on the experts' radar

Stuff You Should Know - I only listen to the episodes I'm interested in. They have hundreds of old episodes available

Around the NFL - just like what it sounds like. 4 guys making jokes and talking NFL news

A Cast of Kings - game of thrones recap/discussion

The Minimalists - I followed the blog previously and didn't expect much from the podcast, but it's actually good.

10% Happier - guided meditations and interviews with interesting people about mindfulness and stuff

So many podcasts, so little time! I am almost looking forward to winter and more inside time for catching up.

I've been enjoying Buddhist Geeks, Life After God, and Witness (really short history podcast from the BBC). When I don't want to think too hard, I just listen to Welcome to Night Vale.

I've added some of the ones you all have mentioned. Thanks!

Are there any good food podcasts? I miss the Alton Browncast like oxygen.

What about wine podcasts other than Wine for Normal People? I found the information on that one great but the presenter ridiculously offputting.

Thanks for the great recommendations everyone, I just doubled my list of podcasts!

Not already mentioned in the thread:

Meditation Oasis: Guided meditations usually ten minutes long. Don't do this while driving!  Helps me fall asleep at night or on planes.

Modern Love: Based on the NYTimes series, they actors/actresses read the stories and then have the actual author on at the end to talk about their short story.

Pursuing Health (CrossFit athlete Julie Foucher is the host): Her hosting/interviewing abilities leave a bit to be desired, but she has some interesting guests.  Health/fitness based podcast.

Slow Home Podcast: This won't be for everyone, but I find the Australian hosts easy to listen to, they have some interesting guests on and talk about month long 'experiments' they do together (one was no screens in the bedroom for a month etc.).

I wish had some * female focused* podcasts I liked.

+1 -- They are so few and far between! Somebody hook us up.

There's "Stuff Your Mom Never Told You". It's made by the same "Stuff You Should Know" people... but it's focused on lady-topics.

Some of them are pretty interesting.

The Broad Experience

It's brilliant. I usually listen to it upon release and then hit replay immediately. Then I make the rest of the household listen to it.

You might want to try "Call your Girlfriend".  Two others that I think have been mentioned are the Slate DoubleX Podcast and Stuff Mom Never Told You.  Also Stuff you Missed in History isn't specifically female focused - but the two hosts are both women and they cover diverse topics including historical ladies.

Female focused in the fitness realm,  but I've like what I've listened to by "Lift Like a Girl"

I recently discovered the Guilty Feminist podcast... and I'm obsessed.

It's a comedy podcast based out of the UK, but they interview interesting women and talk about lady-centric issues. The hosts are hilarious.

Thanks, everyone, I've gotten some helpful suggestions from the recs on here.  Chiming in with what I like, some are repeats:
Serial (season 1 - couldn't get into season 2)
Death, Sex and Money
20 minute yoga sessions from yogadownload.com
Slate's Amicus with Dahlia Lithwick (awesome for fellow lawyers or those interested in the courts/ the Supreme Court)

Some podcasts that I have recently gotten into:

Election Profit Makers-very funny podcast that will go away after the election. The two guys are trying to make money on predictit.org. They have almost convinced me to start trying my hand at it (even though I know it would just be throwing my money away)
Our Debut Album-Two comedians try to make music and document their songwriting process
Heavyweight-Confessional/Problemsolving podcast. Makes me feel a little better for the loss of Mystery Show
The Bone Zone- NSFW; two guys who are just trying to say the most shocking things and make prank calls

Huge fan of Joe Rogan here.  A little less zeal than when I first started, but interesting guests, 99% of the time.
He got me into jiu jitsu, archery, and hunting.
I'd love to see Pete Adeney on the podcast.

Hardcore History with Dan Carlin

I'm almost done with his Countdown to Armageden series on WWI.  I have a major in social studies with an emphasis in history, and I've gained a better perspective on WWI through his podcast than I did through my time in college.  He's that good IMO.

I've heard his series on the Mongol Invasion is the best, but you have to pay for it.  I might choose to pay for it.

I like "Reply All" and basically everything at GimletMedia.com. If you didn't listen to Planet Money when it started, it's worth going back and listening to the old episodes that explained the '08 crisis.

I started listening to Planet Money in around 2011 - quickly realized I had to go back and listen from the beginning. I even got my wife into it when I made her listen to a few episodes on long drives.

The recent season of Startup on American Apparel and Dov Charney is really crazy. Hilarious that every episode they have to warn about bad language like it's a new thing and not a given on that show.

99% Invisible  is really good.

Hollywood Handbook can be very funny. It's improv comedy, which i'm not really into, so it was pretty off-putting at first.

I listen at 1.5x speed. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I devour more material that way.

For residents of NY State, I also just found out that we can access the New York Public Library on Overdrive. Listened to Stumbling on Happiness last week. Have been contemplating whether or not I would enjoy an Audible subscription for a while, but getting audio books for free is much better!

I don't have your background in WWI history, but I felt like his series really gave me a new perspective of the lives that were just thrown away for nothing in WWI.

I bought the Mongol podcasts. I'm a big fan and had read Conn Igguldelden's historical fiction on the Mongols which I loved.

Really like Carlin's treatment of it, but I think that the WWI series was better. Maybe because it's newer and he's better at it. Maybe because I could picture myself in the trenches in WWI and he's got a bunch more source material.

Either way, Carlin is amazing at making me care about history in a way that my high school teachers never could.
