Washing machine
« on: December 28, 2016, 12:50:51 PM »
I've spent the last hour looking at washing machines on Consumer Reports. I think they're lost. The standard top loading agitator washers are rated 20 points less than the top loading HE washers. CR claims they don't clean as well, but I don't want a digital screen or a bunch of bells and whistles that come with the HEs. CR still top rates the washing machines recalled for exploding and their top rated HEs got very negative reviews from actual people.
I just want 3 dials, clean clothes, and it not to break. What do I buy?

Used.  2009 or earlier Whirlpool/Kenmore.

The new washing machines do not clean well and are prone to breakdowns.  There is another lengthy thread on this but I can't find it right now.

Some people like Speed Queen as they are more like the older machines and have agitators.  I have not tried one so I have no opinion.

I've also heard Speed Queen if you want old-style machines. A friend bought one a couple of years ago and is very happy with it.

We have a Sear's outlet store that sells appliances that are scratched and dinged for a discounted price. You pick it out, they deliver free. Definitely mustachian as it also reduces consumer waste.

Here are some of the recent threads:
The November thread: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/reader-recommendations/new-top-loading-washing-machine/
The May thread: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/do-it-yourself-forum!/help-my-washing-machine-wash-the-clothes!/
The March thread: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/need-new-washing-machine-want-a-basic-model/

I agree on Consumer Reports.  I don't think they are useful for when you are hunting used items.  They only keep car reviews and stats for the most recent ten model years, which is not terribly helpful.

Consumer Reports is useless for new.  Their reviews are tainted by their political biases.  Instead of telling you the truth about the EPA ruining your ability to do laundry effectively, they tell you which bells and whistles in the pretty new machines you should buy.  They used to advocate for the consumer.  Not any longer.

If you haven't picked one up yet, you cannot go wrong with a top loading Speed Queen. They are the only washer I would consider if I had to buy new.

Another vote for a Speed Queen here.  Spouse questioned yesterday
"Are those out of the wash?"
Yes.  I replied. I'm just waiting for the dryer to finish.
 "But they almost feel dry."

That's how good the speed queens spin cycle is.   Incredible machine.

We're even considering installing them into all the rental units now because we know we'll NEVER have to deal with them breaking or any complaints!

Yet another vote for Speed Queen.  Pricey, but definitely BIFL.  My husband, an industrial mechanic, swears by their heavy-duty construction and easy repair-ability.  The gearbox has all metal gears, making it much stronger and durable, and the controls are simple-no fancy electronic bits to break or wear out.  Still has plenty of settings for different washes, and cleans clothes very well.
