Walmart curbside pickup
« on: May 09, 2016, 05:42:25 PM »
I recently tried out the walmart curbside pickup. We received a coupon in the mail for $10 off, so we figured we would give it a try. I have no complaints, finding the items on the website took a little bit of time but now that I have did it once it should be easier in the future.

Not really a money savings using this service. However pulling up to a door and having my groceries loaded while not having to unbuckle my tired two year old was awesome!

This is very popular among friends in my area.  I have yet to try it though.  I'm worried that the food won't be the quality that I would pick.  I'm guessing Walmart will select the items that are going to spoil the soonest.

I don't know about Walmart, but when I see the grocery store employees shopping for curbside, they look at the fruit like they are shopping for their own, maybe just a bit quicker- they won't give people bad produce.  They pull stuff off the shelves with whatever is in front, which is likely the soonest expiration date, but they aren't looking for it.

Overall my local walmart has a terrible produce section with a limited selection and expired or damaged fruits/veggies. However the couple produce items I ordered were acceptable. The avocado was green and not usable right away, this could of been a problem if I needed it that night. The bananas were a little green as well. The roma tomatoes were ok. The blueberries were perfect.

For me this service works. When combined with amazon subscribe and save, i'm spending about the same as I would if I shopped myself or maybe less because of impulse buys. But the saver here is time, I estimate this service could save me 40 hours a year.

Another feature I like about the service is I can start a online  grocery list and add to it as the week goes by and when I'm ready pay for everything and go pick it up.

I had a summer job at Home Depot, doing order picking for contractors.  They phone in an order of lumber and stuff and we put it on a pallet and shrink wrap it all up for them to take at the delivery doors later on during the day.  I got in trouble from my supervisor for picking straight and unblemished 2x4s.  He was adamant that only the top layer of lumber be straight, everything below that was a great opportunity to get rid of shitty wood.  :P

I'd also be somewhat suspicious of the Walmart picks.

So is the curbside pickup free or $10?

Right now it is free. I don't know if this will stay true for future orders.

With a few kinks worked out, this service could be valuable. <more spam/copied text>

This seemed too pat and it was (last paragraph). Copied from: https://www.digitaltrends.com/home/walmart-grocery-pickup/

Is this to establish a spam account? A Walmart booster bot?

Personally, i find the prices of the items I buy to more expensive at Walmart than at my local grocer. I have three little kids and I would love to have grocery pickup, but right now I'm just too cheap. Plus I shop the markdown veggie selection at the local grocer and get some good deals there.

I've used Walmart grocery pickup quite a few times. If anything, I think they pick bigger/nicer produce than I would. I often end up with more produce than I intended (and my orders are mostly produce) just because they pick "better" produce than I normally would. I try to save the funny looking bell peppers ;-)
I prefer to use my local grocery store's online shopping even though it's a few dollars more expensive because 1) the apply all coupons and sale prices and 2) their employees are way better at choosing substitutions.
The only drawback I've found with Walmart is that they often don't bother to substitute items or their substitutions really aren't what I would pick.

I don’t shop at Walmart but a few of my coworkers have been telling me to use King Soopers ClickList once my baby comes. It is curbside pickup from King Soopers and my supervisor said she asked an employee  and they pull the produce and such straight from the back because it is more efficient than once it is out on the floor, so you are actually getting fresher produce that isn’t the picked-over stuff left behind by others on the shelf. I would be surprised if Walmart doesn’t do the same.

I dunno about Walmart, but I've used the Giant Eagle pickup and have liked it a lot. The produce has all been just fine and fresh.

We were in the store a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning looking for something specific, and a majority of people in the store were the pickers who put together pickup or delivery orders, which I found interesting.

Plus, when we offered a tip at pickup, we were told that they are store employees and didn't accept tips, so it's not like InstaCart, etc.

This has been my experience on weekday morning visits to Walmart as well.  Everyone else grabbing lettuce were Walmart employees with stacks of plastic bins.

My main hesitation with trying it is all of the packaging waste-- plastic bags galore.  Does anyone know if you can request minimal packaging?

With King Soopers pickup you can request paper bags, if you put a comment in the comment box for EVERY SINGLE ITEM.  I'm not sure if you can request minimal packaging.  Better than 15 plastic bags, though.

Since I usually shop at Aldi and have reusable bags, the occasional plastic bag laden GE order is like a bonanza for me! If I used it weekly, I'd definitely ask if they could use paper.

When I got put on bed rest we tried instacart (DH is blind and can’t drive to do the shopping) and we only did it once for this reason. We have reusable produce bags that we use when we shop and we didn’t even think about the plastic bags. They put every single item in a damn produce bag. Individual jalapeño? Produce bag. 3 potatoes? Produce bag. One cucumber? Produce bag. Between the produce bags and the plastic grocery bags we had over 20 plastic bags delivered to our house. We decided right then and there that it wasn’t worth it to us and won’t do instacart again.

Oh yeah, the plastic bag waste is insane with grocery pickup! I'm disabled and rely on online shopping. My single least favorite thing about it is the environmental catastrophe of dozens of plastic bags per order.

I have successfully used home delivery with Azure Standard.   Their bulk produce, frozen foods, flours, eggs, and laundry supplies  are very good for both price and quality  compared to what I can get from our local co-op.

from their website  azurestandard.com
Looking for where to buy natural, organic groceries and environmentally friendly home supplies?  Look no further.

Get your food delivered by Parcel Carrier (UPS or USPS), or through our unique delivery system of Drop Points. (See maps.) Either way, you’ll have access to the highest quality foods at affordable prices.

We have a drop point in our city with warehouse delivery every two weeks.  Home delivery is available every 4 weeks.  Most items arrive in repurposed cardboard boxes.  The main downside is the limited frequency/schedule.  I haven't tried the UPS option yet, so I don't know the cost, but that may help with the schedule issue.

@gatortator, I haven't heard of Azure Standard before. It looks like they have a drop site the next town over from me. I'm going to look into this!
