Buying a microwave
« on: February 19, 2017, 07:38:31 PM »
I'm moving into a new place and it's the first place I've lived that doesn't have a built-in microwave, so I'm going to have to buy a countertop one.  I don't know the first thing about buying microwaves - what matters, what's just upselling me.  Would appreciate any feedback on microwave models you recommend and any general advice about what to look for when buying one.

If you are using it to reheat plates of food and cook veggies, at least 1.0 cubic feet and 1,000 watts will be enough.  I like Sharp and Panasonic, but none is as well made as say 15 years ago.  Costco has or had a Panasonic around $100 with 1,100 watts that was a reasonable size.  Large microwaves have large foot prints and take up a lot of counter space.  If you can pick up a working older Sharp from Craigslist, I would consider that.  Mine is at least fifteen years old as are the ones I left in rental units.

I bought our emerson brand microwave at target on clearance in 2008 for $36, regular price was probably $60 or so.  It's 9 years old and still works.  So I wouldn't spend a ton.  All I ever use is the +30 seconds button (as many times as needed), I don't think there's any need for the fancy settings or power levels.
