TV Comedy: "Fresh Off the Boat"
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:22:00 PM »
If you guys have access to the ABC comedy Fresh Off the Boat, I think you guys would really enjoy the "Mustachianism" of the main family, especially the mom, Jessica.

There was a whole episode based around car negotiation, and for Valentine's Day the main couple stayed home and reveled in finding tax deductions. It's a very sweet and funny show and even though I am not remotely Chinese-American, the Huangs remind me of my own family more than any I have ever seen on TV.

I'm waiting for this to get on Netflix since I'm too lazy to watch commercials and enjoy binge watching. You are right that it is quite funny (and offensive. Especially when they have relatives over).

It is funny, but I also don't like commercials. So, I'm waiting for Netflix too.

Season one was pretty amusing.

I'll get Season 2 when it's finished airing. (We never watch shows week to week, but wait and get whole seasons at a time.)

The show is absolutely hilarious. As an Asian American, it's pretty awesome to finally see a show like it on mainstream TV. DH read Eddie Huang's book and said it was very entertaining, so I'm looking forward to checking it out when I get a chance.

I liked Season 1 more than Season 2, but it's a good show.

The younger brothers are hysterical. I'm not fond of Eddie's character.

The mom is a hoot. In the first episode she was calculating some cost based on price per kilowatt.

This is my new favorite show, until GoT comes back.

I'm waiting for this to get on Netflix since I'm too lazy to watch commercials and enjoy binge watching. You are right that it is quite funny (and offensive. Especially when they have relatives over).

I've been meaning to check this out but haven't gotten around to it yet. I actually read Eddie's book of the same name. He's a pretty interesting dude.

Read and loved the book, a very fresh take on immigrant life.  He actually boycotted the primetime show because he found it too watered-down from his own experience.  He has shows on Vice, primarily Huang's World.  They're worth a look but VERRRY different from the sitcom; more Bourdain-esque travelogue.
