Student loan payments refund
« on: September 08, 2022, 06:47:14 PM »
In 2020 throughout the COVID pandemic, I continued to paydown my wife's student loan.  Approximately $175 a month.  I stopped this in 2021 in the hope of student loan forgiveness (we had also eliminated the high interest (if interest rates restored) loan, and were left with a low interest (if interest rates restored) loan.

Her employer also paid $150 a month (dropped to $100 in 2021) that counted as income before the CARES act (i.e we got taxed on it), but was excluded from income after the CARES act.

Now that the government will pay off up to $10,000 for us, we decided to request a refund of the unnecessary payments we made.  This amounts to approx $1,600.  The total loan will go up (but still under $10,000), and this should be forgiven by the government.

“You can get a refund for any payment (including auto-debit payments) you make during the payment pause (beginning March 13, 2020). Contact your loan servicer to request that your payment be refunded.”

The payments are sent back to the originator, so I did not request the payments made by my wife's employer.
Does anyone have an ideas about ways to go about getting refunds (or at least tax back) on the payments made by her employer?
Above line is no longer relevant as it wasn't taxed income in the first place, so I don't really care, as I doubt her employer will send the money on to her once they get it back from the student loan company.

Good luck to anyone else attempting a refund before a forgiveness.
