Portable wifi device?
« on: July 16, 2019, 08:03:43 AM »
Hey friends!

I'm in a remote cottage in the US for the summer. Part of the beauty is the no-AC, no technology but... I have some video calls with clients so I've gotta figure something short-term out for WiFi :/

Any advice?

Do you have a modern smart phone and cellular access?

The US is a big place.  If it really is a cottage, you might find video calls aren't an option, at least from there.  (for example, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is full of places with spotting cell coverage, and limited broadband connection options, even if you wanted to)  You can confirm mobile coverage at a carrier's site.  I would also look for the nearest cafe / library / sympathetic hotel or B&B and see about using them as a base.

Video calls on a mobile hot spot are tough. I spend a month every summer in a rural area. I've found email and normal web browsing work okay-ish on a hot spot, but video is a whole 'nother beast. My best suggestion is to find a library within commuting distance.

Thanks everyone.

I went to a local cafe in the end. Like you said, @margep & @doingfine , the cellular hotspot is fine for the basics. But in the words of @LifeHappens , the video calls are a whole 'nother beast :)
