Title: Office clothes for dudes
Post by: Le Poisson on July 31, 2015, 05:48:28 AM
For the past N years I've done most of my clothes shopping at the local thrift stores, but lately I've noticed a dearth of clothes in my size that are passable as professional casual. I need tips for good places for good clothes.

I know there is a drycleaner in town with an 'unclaimed' rack, so I may thumb through it.
SWMBO has turned to shopping almost exclusively at Old Navy via online orders since the return policy is so good, and she doesn't have to leave the house (saves on gas too!)
Looking locally, I am aghast that a pair of pants bought new ticks in at nearly $100.00.

We are doing a US road trip soon - if there are stores that are worth checking out for cheap office clothes that last, please tip me off (I haven't clothes shopped in the states in years. - like about 20)
I know Marks Workwearhouse up here has stuff come up on sale every now and then, but still, pants there are around $50.00 on the clearance rack.

What deals can you guys point me to?

I scored some khaki colored Marmot pants that serve double duty as weekend wear on sale at the local sporting goods big box.  I pick up dress pants and shirts at Costco. (I am not a clothes horse)

While travelling in the States, are you going to be near any outlet malls?  DH usually finds dress shirts and office type pants at Van Heusen, etc. in those malls.  I think most of them are owned by Premier - just Google them, and search for cities you will be travelling through.

Now is a good time to even check out the Bay - they usually put their summer clothing on sale for 60-75% off at this time of year.

My DH buys work clothes at Costco about every 5-10 years. Khaki pants and buttondown shirts. He looks very presentable.

Another good option is Lands End (online). They have very generous return policies and free shipping. Their clothes last forever.

Check out the website Dappered. The Thursday Handful post often has great deals.

...work clothes at Costco...

The Kirkland brand all cotton dress shirts are a great value, although the selection  is pretty limited.

I bought several polos (polyester - golf style) from Kohl's a few years ago.  Shirts are indestructible.  Collars stay put, no wrinkles, look like when I bought them and I cycle through them each week.  Rarely require a wash.  With the typical 30% off Kohl's coupon, I think I paid something like $6-7 per shirt.

Ross and TJ Maxx.  Usually have dress shirts for about $15.  Also, you can find some good deals on Amazon.

The Kirkland pants won't work if you're not below, say 5' 10" or so.  Rise is too short in the pants with longer in seams.  Check the online reviews, which I've personally experienced.  Save your boys an uncomfortable few minutes.

Costco occasionally has those shirts for $13'ish. Decent.

Kohls for pants but yeah getting anything for $25 or less is hard.

Uniqlo has some nice men's shirts pants etc for reasonable prices. I bought a few button downs for $13 on sale that I am very happy with. I also second lands end and the recommendation for dappered.com.
Dappered is not at all mustachian, but they will tell you what is of acceptable quality and when it is on sale. Just don't get sucked into their consumerist black hole.

J crew factory has sales quite often and carries some nice stuff as well.

Ross generally has the lowest prices.  However, my go-to places are Express and Old Navy during end of season sales.  Both of those locations offer better fitting outfits for those of us who are fit/slim.

I got my formal clothing/shoes in Italy during their end of year sales.

Another vote for Costco dress shirts. They are a good value.

I've found some stuff at Burlington Coat Factory - mostly suits and suit separates. It requires good timing and luck as usually there is only a small range of sizes in each item. But if you luck out, the prices are usually very good.

I buy my work pants @ K&G Superstore (~$30 each, a couple pairs every couple years).  I buy my work shirts @ Dillard's Clearance Center - last time I got 4 @ $7.50 each.  I got 2 suits @ K&G a while back, too.  They were bogo.  I think it was like $100 for both.

Like you, I found that thrift stores kind of stopped working for me for work stuff.
