Neeva- A Better Search Engine
« on: January 15, 2023, 06:48:45 AM »
I recently found www.neeva.com

It's a search engine that doesn't have ads and doesn't sell data.  And I've been impressed with the quality of search results since I found it a week ago.

They have a Freemium business model, so they want you to upgrade to a $50/yr subscription which includes a password manager and a VPN.  While this feels pretty un-mustachian to pay for search, I think there's a case for it given how scummy the ad/data tracking companies have become.  I haven't decided whether to pay for it or not.

Some of the features I like:
1. They provide an AI written synopsis of what you're trying to search for right in the search window.
2.When searching for news, there is a slider to show you news articles on a topic from more right leaning or left leaning sources.
3. I didn't appreciate how much of other search engines had become ads until I used one without ads.

I'm curious what others think, and I hope you find it useful.

Interesting, I’ll take a look. As far as their paid service, I pay about $30 for a VPN already so it may be worth it depending on what they have to offer

been trying it out, still needs some work for results relevant, ease of use for me vs google.

maybe if it has a map app that ties my location history to the browser search results

work it, work it, lol

Not tried it, but:

I use Firefox, have uBlock Origin, and use duckduckgo. I don't see any adverts.

I do basically all my searching in a private tab anyway.

Neeva will still voluntarily hand over your data (among some other issues):

Honestly, if the “worst” aspects of it is a design that encourages signing up and that they will respond to law enforcement requests (as all companies do), I feel pretty good about it.

I also started playing with the mobile app, and I’m not sure whether I’ll end up preferring Neeva or Firefox for a mobile browser. Firefox is a bit more intuitive, but Neeva seems to be better at auto-rejecting unnecessary cookies (anecdotally).

Oh shit, maybe you all know this, but it showed every store and place I've been to and the number of times.

I have location history turned off.  Question is, does it hide it from Google or just me...

I use DuckDuckGo on mobile. It has tracker-blocking capability and an additional blocker that one turns on in the settings that can work to block tracking ads in other apps.

I have been using the Brave browser on desktop and mobile and also their Brave search engine. Usually good results. If not, you can leverage the "bangs" and use Brave to search other things like Google (e.g., "!g George Washington" typed into the Brave search will take your search to Google). Far more private than other search engines/browsers. I also pay for Private Internet Access, a VPN service that has been taken to court several times and asked to turn over logs/records that they simply do not have. So that tells me they are probably far more legit than other VPN services.
