Mustachian Songs!
« on: December 30, 2015, 06:22:54 PM »
Allright Folks!

Purpose of this post is to identify our favorite songs that somehow represent the Mustachian lifestyle.  In what way do your favorite songs represent you as a person? Think of this as the spot to have a music "book club".

I'll start, one of my favorite albums of the last decade is the Into the Wild Soundtrack, which is basically Eddie Vedder singing with a guitar for 45 minutes.  The song that best represents my ideal lifestyle, Mustachianism, is "Society", which is a lovely song from that album. This song plays on Pandora if you are interested.  It is actually written by this guy called Jerry Hallan, here are the lyrics:

It's a mystery to me
We have a greed with which we have agreed
And you think you have to want more than you need
Until you have it all, you won't be free

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me

When you want more than you have, you think you need
And when you think more than you want, your thoughts begin to bleed
I think I need to find a bigger place
Cause when you have more than you think, you need more space

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
Society, crazy indeed
Hope you're not lonely without me

There's those thinking more or less, less is more
But if less is more, how you keepin score?
Means for every point you make your level drops
Kinda like you're startin' from the top
And you can't do that

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
Society, crazy indeed
I hope you're not lonely without me
Society, have mercy on me
I hope you're not angry if I disagree
Society, you're crazy indeed
I hope you're not lonely without me

The album "Menos El Oso" by Minus The Bear has always been reminiscent of the reasons why I am Mustachian, even though the album itself doesn't directly discuss anything directly Mustachian.

I am truly, seriously  broken-hearted that the dog broke my CD of Mr. Whitekeys & the Fabulous Spamtones (an Alaskan comedy band) singing:

"Don't Let Me Go Alone To Costco". Has to be the most anti-consumer song out there.

"My Favorite Things" is also pretty awesome sung to the famous Broadway tune of the same name. From memory:

"Carharts and pickups
and unshaven faces.

Guys on probation
from far away places.

Horny old geezers thaw out in the spring-
these are a few of my favorite things!

He came to visit
with me and my kittens.

Next week they're missing
and he has fur mittens.

He never bathes
and his underwear clings...these are a few of my favorite things.

Guys who dress formal
in snowmobile parkas.

Go out and kill things
and bring home the carcass.

When he goes camping
and he takes a dump.

He's not afraid to use leaves on his rumpppppppp.

When his dog bites.
When his feet stink.
When he's wearing plaid.

I simply remember he works on the slope-

CHA-CHING!!!
....and then I don't feel...sooo.....bad!"

Basic translation: grungy mountain man who works on the slope make mega bucks, so she'll put up with a little...eccentricity, shall we say.

Although the 'mittens' woulda pissed me off.

Oddly, when I first heard Ciara’s song “Chandelier” it reached something in my gut and made me feel like a kid just dismissed from school for the summer. Unfortunately, I had some months to work after hearing that song! But it remains my FIRE anthem.

Band: Passion Pit
Song: Take a Walk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZX6Q-Bj_xg

It's not necessarily mustachian per se..but it does take a walk through several 'case studies' of people, shining light on several money-related themes like 'American Dream' expectations, Keeping up with the Joneses, and the perils, misguided views, and mistakes of many

"Practice isn't perfect
With the market cuts and loss
I remind myself that times could be much worse
My wife won't ask me questions
And there's not so much to ask
And she'll never flaunt around an empty purse
Once my mother-in-law came
Just to stay a couple nights
Then decided she would stay the rest of her life
I watch my little children, play some board game in the kitchen
And I sit and pray they never feel my strife
But then my partner called to say the pension funds were gone
He made some bad investments
Now the 'counts are overdrawn"

Honey it's your son* I think I borrowed just too   much
We had taxes we had bills
We had a lifestyle to front
And tonight I swear I'll come home
And we'll make love like we're young
And tomorrow you'll cook dinner
For the neighbors and the kids
We could rip apart those socialists
And all their damn taxes
You'll see I am no criminal
I'm down on both bad knees
I'm just too much a coward
To admit when I'm in need"

* not quite sure why the son is coming home to make love with his honey (i.e. his mother?) Other than that, great song!

My FIRE song is Europe: The Final Countdown. For some reason it makes me think of FIRE.

Also these songs and many of the others from Judah and the Lion

The second one is less about Mustachian principles I guess, more just about not settling. Kinda the anthem of the millennials I’d say haha, but whatever. It’s music. They’re rockstars. They get a pass for having artistic license.

The actual music video is a lot better than the song by itself - pretty hilarious

pretty much anything by Bad Religion, but Against the Grain comes to mind as a specific song that defined me before i became a corporate desk-whore.  It definitely captures the essence of doing what we do.
