Title: Mint.com alternatives
Post by: nkt0 on May 25, 2018, 09:54:16 AM
Am i the only one that doesn't trust Intuit with my data? Do others have alternatives to Mint.com for tracking spending? A sweet spreadsheet template?

My spending is pretty simple, split between checking, one credit card, and occasional cash purchases.

I use Mint for on-the-go tracking, but I also have a spreadsheet system where I track not only spending, but budget, income, savings rate, and a bunch of financial goals. (I've got so many tabs in that sheet at this point.) I highly rec Google docs -- since manual tracking doesn't require account access, it's more secure, and it also allows you to have your data available on the go if you want to do tracking as you spend.

I don't get the suspicion over using Mint. Intuit owns TurboTax too. You know, the one that files your federal taxes and has all of your identifying info already.

I don't think they're that careless; likely less so than most other free aggregating sites out there. Monitor your accounts and you'll likely catch anything early anyway.

I’m sure they’re just as careful as Equifax and Wells Fargo. Neither of those companies would ever carelessly expose their users’ data.

I'm using https://beancount.github.io/fava/ (https://beancount.github.io/fava/), which is completely self-hosted, and I am quite happy with it.

If you are tech savvy and are okay with manually inserting data about your transactions I'd recommend you to have a look at it.

I recommend it to people familiar with technology because, albeit it's easy enough to use, setting it up and running it might be a bit confusing.

Awesome. Exactly what I was looking for!
