I'm looking for book recommendations, and it seems most of the threads on here seem to be for books about finances/behavioral psychology. I definitely have a bunch of those on my to-read list, but am also looking for books about people who do badass stuff.

For example, I read "Touch the Top of the World", about the first blind man to climb the Seven Summits, totally inspiring.
I'm awaiting in the mail "The Final Frontiersman", about the only family that lives in ANWAR.
I also love chef memoirs, musician memoirs, badass historical figures (Teddy Roosevelt, for example), etc.

I'm open to anything! And I could definitely stand to read cool entrepreneurial stuff as I'm trying to get up the balls to do something of my own.

 Cheers!

Well, I recommended this on another thread, so I don't want to sound obsessive.  But Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains, about Dr. Paul Farmer, is inspirational.

I also liked
Robyn Davidson's Tracks (crossing Australia alone by camel)
Jan Baalsrud's We Die Alone (true World World II experiences - absolutely astonishing)
Alicia Appleman-Jurman's Alicia: My Story (experiences under the Nazis - an absolutely amazing, heroic person)

Cheers Argyle!

I have read Tracks and loved it. I've heard tons about Mountains Beyond Mountains.

I'll look up all your recommendations, thanks!

We Die Alone was an absolutely stunning read!

Check out Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea by Steve Callahan for another page turner.

I goofed -- We Die Alone is about Jan Baalsrud, but the author is David Howarth.

Books like these?

Rosie Swale Pope - Just a little run around the world
Rob Lilwall - Cycling home from Siberia

I could do with some more suggestions like those as well, I too love to read these stories. Gives me something to dream about..

Here are some good ones I've read recently:

My Share of the Task; Gen. McChrystal Autobiog. of Stanley McChrystal, Special Operations officer
Wild Bill Donovan; Waller Biog. of Bill Donovan, founder of the OSS
Genius: Life & Times of Richard Feynman; Gleick Biog. of Richard Feynman, American physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project
Where Men Win Glory; Krakauer Biog. of Pat Tillman, probably the best book I've read this year
Hetty: America’s First Female Tycoon; Slack Biog. of Hetty Green, one of America's richest women, good investing book.
Passionate Nomad: The Life of Freya Stark; Geniesse Biog. of Freya Stark, British explorer in the Middle East

Wild by Cheryl Strayed

It's hugely popular right now, and for good reason. Story of a young woman hiking the Pacific Crest Trail by herself. It's also the story of everything that happened in her life up until then. Cheryl Strayed is also the columnist Dear Sugar, who I can't recommend highly enough. She has another book called Tiny Beautiful Things which is all Dear Sugar columns. I love it.

West with the Night by Beryl Markham

She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west. It's the story of her life growing up in Africa and becoming a bush pilot. Beautifully written. Ernest Hemingway once wrote in a letter, "Did you read Beryl Markham's book, West With The Night? ...She has written so well, and marvellously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with words, picking up whatever was furnished on the job and nailing them together and sometimes making an okay pig pen. But this girl, who is to my knowledge very unpleasant and we might even say a high-grade bitch, can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers ... it really is a bloody wonderful book."

No Horizon is so Far by Ann Bancroft and Cheryl Dahle

I read this one awhile ago but it's the story of the first two women to cross Antarctica on foot. I really liked it.

I have found a lot of those I-was-sad-and-I-hiked-a-long-trail books. One of my faves was A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. His book is funny at times.

I've read very mixed reviews about Wild.

West With The Night is a great book! I read it a few years back when I read heaps of aviation pioneer books.

I will definitely add No Horizon is So Far to my reading list. Looks great!

Has anyone read Alone in Antarctica by Felicity Aston? She was the first woman to cross Antarctica alone. I haven't read it yet but it could be good.

Bill Bryson is one funny dude and doesn't take himself too seriously. A Walk in the Woods is very entertaining.

So I don't know if this fits your definition of awesome, but I'll recommend it anyway.

For My Father: the Story of My Life (1910-2000): Volume One of an Autobiography Paperback
by Justine Randers-Pehrson

The author had a varied view of the shifting world during nine decades of the Twentieth Century. Her conventional life as an Army daughter ended abruptly in 1922 when her father died. She lived in Washington DC with her widowed mother, with the exception of years at college in the US and abroad. Her professional life as a staff member at the Library of Congress ended when an irregular relationship evolved into pregnancy. She and the child and the child's father joined forces in southern Maryland, on an abandoned farm where all their neighbors were black.

During the following 17 years, the author was the family breadwinner, with three children, a situation that at one time led the family to near destitution. She recovered, and gradually moved up the Civil Service career ladder to positions of responsibility, at last as a translator for the US Patent Office.

In subsequent years, she became interested in ancient history and traveled extensively, gathering material for a book on the Later Roman Empire. Other historical works followed, as well as historical novels. In her varied career, the author gained insights into the difficulties of uneducated single mothers, and of rural blacks. She was active in the Civil Rights Movement, going to Mississippi during the "Freedom Summer" as a member of a biracial team.

For My Father offers thumbnail sketches of a variety of public figures, all the way from Buffalo Bill to Alfred North Whitehead, Norman Thomas, Walter Reuther, and Jesse Jackson.

[Full disclosure: She was my grandmother, and a more awesome woman I've never met.]

I realized I made it sound like Bill Bryson was sad and took a walk in the woods. His book is not like that. It's funny and well done. I am a bit tired of memoirs about people doing a lot of drugs/drinking a lot of alcohol and then going through AA. In Wild, the author has sex with strange men and shoots up heroin. It might be for some, but I am tired of those sorts of stories.

On another thread, I recommend the Catherine the Great biography. Good. Not a memoir as you requested but worth a read. Also in the biography category are Marie Antoinette and Mary, Queen of Scots both by Antonia Fraser. Fraser does an excellent job of capturing the story and developing a narrative around the lives of these two people.

I've heard the Steve Jobs bio is good.

I keep thinking of bios instead of memoirs...Hm.

I don't know how many biogs have been written about him, but if you are referring to the one by Isaacson, yes it's really good.

Cheers heaps for all the suggestions, and please keep them coming!

BTW I am currently reading "I Married the Klondike" by Laura Berton. She was a 29-year-old kindergarten teacher in Toronto and moved to the the Klondike to teach school during the gold rush. She ended up living there for 25 years. There were heaps of amazing characters in all of those gold rushes.

Also reading Good Time Girls, about prostitutes of the Alaska-Yukon gold rush. Might sound silly, but plenty of these women led extremely bold lives by any standard and accomplished all sorts of physical feats. For example, the first woman to cross Chilkoot Pass ("the 32 meanest miles in the world") was a prostitute, though the credit went to a woman of higher social standing who came years later.

I myself recommend surfer Kelly Slater's books to anyone interested. The only person to win 11 win titles in any sport, and he's an awesome guy, very humble and genuine.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through this book right now (started yesterday, it's a quick read) and am enjoying it so far.

Recently read Walden on Wheels, it was pretty entertaining.

Also on my list is The Match King.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

Yeah. That is the one. It's the most famous, I think.

The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King written by Michael King.
It's about a Mustachian billionaire by the name of Andrew Beal.  Kid grew up poor, built a real estate empire starting in his early 20s, became a billionaire in his 30s.  Decided to take up poker and go after the pros.  Unassuming man, flies economy, frugal poor kid at heart.
Very interesting stuff, definitely will keep you busy during a cross-country flight.

Blind Courage - a book about a blind man who hiked the Appalachian Trail with his seeing eye dog.  Also, Kindness of Strangers which has already been mentioned is a fantastic read about a man who hitchhiked across America without a penny. For those with Kindles, it is free from the lending library.
