I use Free Tax USA. (freetaxusa.com) I prepare my federal returns for free. They charge for state returns, but as my state does not have a state income tax that is not an issue for me. I do feel like it helps that I'm an accountant and have prepared taxes professionally, so I'm not sure if it's necessarily the best tool for someone completely inexperienced.
