Get paid to use Strava $1/hour
« on: April 10, 2015, 06:58:50 PM »
I just signed up at http://www.competitivecyclist.com/strava to get paid to use Strava.  I've never used competetivecyclist.com before, but from looking at their sales page, they have some awesome deals on winter gear right now.  The money you earn expires at the end of the following month, and it's $40 max.  Not a load of money, and it's a lot of work to earn it.  But I already ride a fair amount and this is an incentive to ride a little more.  I already use Strava, so this is a no brainer.  I use Strava mainly to track the mileage on my bikes.  I'm not sure why I think that is useful information to have, but whatever.

Does anyone have any experience with this?  I searched the forum and could not find any other threads on it.

Strava sell the usage data to state governments, local councils (county or state transit authorities in USA i guess ??). Money for nothin, and even if you dont use the money every month, it's still useful when you do.
Sweet. I'll be signing up ;)

Am I crazy or did they change the terms on us?  When I signed up I thought it said the minimum individual ride time had to be at least 30 minutes to start earning credits, and now it says you don't start earning credits until an individual ride has hit the 1-hour mark.  My bike commute is slightly under an hour each way, so I've been earning zero credits.  Am I supposed to leave Strava running between rides, so that the entire day's worth of riding counts as a single ride?

Moving time of the ride must be at least 60 minutes to begin earning credits

What a bummer...

I'll be honest, I've been sick the last few days and haven't even tried to use it yet.  Seems like they got more people to sign up than they were anticipating; now they're panicking, closing registration, changing the terms, etc.  My commute is only 12 minutes each way, so I probably won't get much out of this offer.

FYI for anyone else who signed up for this, on Friday I left Strava paused during the day between my morning and evening bike commutes and now I got the $1.50 credit for the 100-minute round trip.

Well, that didn't last long - got an email last night that they're eliminating the program due to higher than anticipated enrollment.  Gee, lots of people signed up for free money? Who woulda thunk?

Yep, I got the email too.  I finally felt well enough yesterday to ride my bike to work.  I left it running all day.  I also went and played in a softball game last night.  I got home and I still had not ridden an hour, so I rode around the block for another 5 minutes.  Came inside to sync it up, and saw the email about suspending the program....

"You signed up by the tens of thousands and told everyone you knew. We had expectations and you blew them out of the water.  Because of this we’ve had to pause new sign-ups, and we must stop issuing new credits beginning tomorrow, April 21st. We’re already hard at work on a revised program that can support many, many more people. We will update you with the details of this revised program on May 19th. If you have earned money, it’s yours to keep and we encourage you to put it towards something great. Those credits will expire on May 31st at 11:59 pm MST.  Because you’ve already connected, when the program resumes, you’ll be ready to roll."

But it synced up and I got the dollar credit.  Hopefully they will reintroduce the program with different terms, and soon.  I added something to my online cart and saw the dollar discount so it really is an easy thing to use.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
