Desktop for minimal needs
« on: August 15, 2017, 12:24:00 PM »
I am looking for a simple desktop computer that I can pair with a good-sized monitor.  When I say simple, I mean can run Microsoft Office pro and have internet.  Super basic.  It will be mainly for checking email and Word/Excel use.  My husband and I both have Surfaces from work, but we'd like something for home.  I am barely computer spec literate, but it seems like everything I've looked at is way beyond our needs.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

I bought a $200 lenovo laptop (B40) with hdmi port two years ago. HDMI allows for a larger monitor. I then dumped windows and loaded ubuntu. Runs better than my wife's apple. Cheap, fast and expandable....

I switched from a long time Windows Desktop user to a Google cloud existence on a Chromebook. There isn't a single Word or Excel feature that I miss-- the Google suite covers 100% of my needs. And I have to say that always being backed up in the cloud is awesome. My kids broke my Chromebook laptop a couple years ago. No problem: the replacement had nothing to install and all my work was exactly where I left it.

And if you want to stick with Word and Excel, Microsoft's free online versions of those products will probably work just fine for you too.

Pretty much anything on TigerDirect's refurbished desktop pages will be fine.

This guy looks great for the price:
