Energy retailers in Victoria Australia
« on: July 31, 2016, 09:46:46 PM »
Hello :)

I am moving into a new property in country Victoria in a few weeks, so I need to pick a new energy retailer.  I have previously been with Alinta (argh, annoying billing), and Lumo many years ago.  Does anyone have any retailers that they would recommend?  I've been looking at online reviews, but all the companies have received poor reviews and lots of complaints.

I've had great experiences with Powershop.

They are the brand behind Meridien Energy, a majority government owned utility from New Zealand, that has a focus on renewables, and has since branched out to Australia.

Why did I go for Powershop?

- Data
Their online and phone based management app allows you to see your electricity consumption as you go (with a one day delay). This allows you to manage your consumption on the fly, rather than get quarterly bills and have no idea what your consumption is like between bills.  I think most retailers are rolling out this kind of functionality with smart meters but I think Powershop were the first to roll it out in a way that was a core part of their product.

- Specials
You can sign up with them and forget about it like a typical energy retailer, or you can manage your consumption by buying blocks of power in advance when they are on special.  You can also buy more expensive energy from renewable sources. According to the online site I have saved about $700 the past year by buying electricity at rates slightly cheaper than the standard rates.  It doesn't take too much time to manage.

- Pricing
Prices seemed to run near the lowest of all providers when I analysed them using the vic gov comparison website:

http://www.yourchoice.vic.gov.au/

A note on pricing.  The combine the standing charge and the usage rate in one figure.  So, like all energy retailers, you are always paying a standing charge. However, Powershop combine the two into a dynamic price that is calculated per kw.

- Referral
You and your referree can get a $75 credit if you refer friends, family or strangers you meet on the internet.  PM if you'd like me to send you a referrer link.

I've managed to refer about 7 friends to Powershop over the past year and all are happy.

- No Contract
Lastly, no lock in contracts.

Cheap prices, and no lock in contract, clear data on consumption - it's a great product and I'm very happy!

Hope this was useful. Good luck with your decision.

Momentum looked pretty good value.

I switched to Dodo a few months ago from AGL. It costs about as much with GreenPower (and the pay on time discount) as AGL did without either.

My parents switched to Simply Energy a while ago, and they're in regional VIC.
