Since I let my hair go silver I've tried a couple of higher-end shampoos for white/gray/silver hair--Klorane and Jhirmack Silver something or other. Not ridiculously expensive, but not the cheapest. And I've tried the expensive Davines brand. They worked fine, but I've used them all up and gone back to some plain old $1.00 shampoo and conditioner by V05. Absolutely no difference--hair looks and feels great.

Just updating to say that I am still using VO5 shampoo and conditioner. I've currently got the Tea Escapes Blackberry Sage Tea shampoo (latest bottle on sale for 75 cents), and a bottle of the Tea Therapy Blackberry Sage Tea revitalizing conditioner (think it was $1.00. I use the tiniest dab of conditioner, so it lasts forever.) I would not cheap out on my hair--if I felt that an expensive product would work better, yes, (Wall of Shame and Comedy), I would buy it. But I can honestly say that my silver hair looks better with the VO5 products than it did with the expensive products for white/gray/silver hair. YMMV, but I've been very satisfied. Got another compliment on my do-it-myself, crea cut, silver hair yesterday. Yay!

Just thought I'd mention that I've found Big Lots to have amazing deals on certain things like make up brushes.  I have gotten some surprisingly good quality brushes there for like $1-2!

All right you mustachian beauties - I'm looking for a dupe suggestion.

I just finished using a free sample of Korres Golden Krocus Ageless Saffron Elixir Serum - my skin looks amazing (and after trying that and the overnight wild rose facial I am thumbs-upping Korres products). But a full size bottle is way too expensive.

Anyone know of any amazon or paula's choice that use saffron?

I'm not pulling up anything with saffron specifically, and I'm not finding anything that is showing saffron as an 'effective' ingredient in skincare :(. Looking at the ingredient list, you might get similar effects from a hyaluronic acid serum, which is a popular moisturizing ingredient.  HA serums are everywhere and (can be) cheap. You can check out the reason/purpose of each ingredient in a product you like on a website like this.  For maximum cost savings, look to purchase products with the relevant ingredients directly from a wholesaler like http://www.rainshadowlabs.com/

You will probably get more and better answers on a cosmetics or skin care forum. Reddit has a few good ones (I like /r/skincareaddiction and /r/asianbeauty), and there are several websites devoted to makeup/cosmetics/skin care (I'm largely unfamiliar with these types of sites, hopefully someone else can recommend a good place to start).

I just got a sample of this, and now I'm afraid that I'll really like it :)  I wanted to try it because it has copper peptides.  Maybe try something with that? I also got a full size of http://www.sephora.com/ultimate-lift-tm-firming-serum-P381018?skuId=1552900 to try. Still not cheap, but almost half the price.

I had some BI points so ran to sephora and actually got another sample of this to get me through the next month.

I haven't used the Ole firming serum but love the Truth serum and it is cheap by serum standards (sephora sells a .5 oz bottle for $15 bucks a few times a year and I grab it then).  I've used OH for a few years and really like it but have recently gotten the Korres samples via rewards and the Play! subscription and have been blown away!

I'll cross my fingers that you don't like the Korres Krocus serum though :)

Haha, thanks :) I'm a fan of the Truth Serum, too. I'll post back after I've tried the firming serum. I've been experimenting with different stuff hoping to find a solid but minimal routine.

Skincare is probably one of my bigger personal expenses, but I don't spend much on makeup and hair, so that's how I justify it to myself.

Another recommendation I'll make is the peels from Makeup Artist's Choice. They're much less expensive than products with similar active ingredients from places like Sephora, and I've had great results from them.

I ordered a Crea Clip on Amazon, rather than pay $55 for my twice yearly cut at a decent salon.  Let's just say I need more practice, LOL.  I did cut a good 6 inches off (it was super long), but now it's got 37 different lengths.  But I don't care.

I asked the wife on this one as she is not an online poster (don't ask) but she managed to trim great deal of money off of her budget after she was diagnosed with skin cancer on her beautiful face (all better now) but it made here change her habits immediately. Through that we had some interesting learnings for both of us. First and foremost, watch out for the dirty 5 or 7 chemicals that you should never put on our skin - you can look this up online but Parabens are number 1 and she said to watch out for the name paraben being hidden in the middle of many longer names that are impossible to understand. Then anything that has phthalates in it, usually at the end of a long word and hidden in between.

There are three products she buys and subscribes to on amazon as the prices are great, she can bundle them together in one trip, and receive on schedule. First is an 11.00, organic moisturizer that is fantastic. She did not like the smell at first but has come to love it because it has good stuff in it and works as well as the expensive things she used to buy from the (cough cough - Mall or Sephora - I have nightmares from the credit card bills we used to have). It's called Alba Botanica hawaiian moisturizer. She also gets the body oil, smells yummy, and then we both use Kiss My Face SPF Suncreen in the orange spray bottle. Our Derm has said that he can really tell a difference on both of us since we have been using this product after her diagnosis.

For make up, she uses none of that liquid junk. Uses bare minerals that also has an spf in it. She said you have to get used to how to use it but w/practice you can get the hang of it. It last forever - powder in little containers w/a brush. They also have eye shadows and she buys like 2 neutral colors she said and uses those all the time and never seems to run out - little tubs with powder in them. She  doesn't do much else, maybe a little mascara I think - let me ask...;).   ok, she uses Tart because they produce in more sustainable packaging and formulas or something like that. Good luck. I will say, after the skin cancer scare, none of this junk matters to us much other than the sunscreen. She puts on make up now more for others than herself. It makes others feel more comfortable but we understand as we are corporate drones too until we FIRE in the next year or so.

I've been meaning to comment on this thread...was having an interesting discussion about it with my husband last night.

I've never been a big makeup person but even less so since I had children (no time). I remember at age 30 seeing my first crows feet and actually crying over them. I bought several expensive creams to try out. I bought hair dye for my greys. And then I realized...I have two choices. I can keep despairing over this process (aging/wrinkling), which will literally never be any better than it is today, or I can decide once and for all that I'm not going to let an inevitable process define my happiness or my understanding of my own worth.

After some research I truly believe the vast majority of expensive skin products are not really effective at doing much. Sunscreen 20 years ago is pretty much the answer. Sunscreen now is the second best answer. I've noticed taking a washcloth to my face before using a drugstore facial cleanser seems to make me a bit "glow-y" in an attractive way. And I keep some makeup around for dates and work.

But mostly self-acceptance has been my best product as far as downsizing my makeup/beauty budget goes. My favorite quote is from a friend: "Yesterday I looked at an old picture of myself and realized that I wished I were as fat as when I first started thinking I looked fat." This applies to "old" as well.

Well said. Also, taking care of yourself on the inside (eating lots of healthy food that's full of the nutrients the body needs) will help you look good on the outside. There have actually been studies that show people prefer the "golden glow" of the skin of someone who eats a lot of vegetables. Sure beats an orange tan-in-a-bottle or the natural tan that comes with increased cancer risk!
