Do you value a newspaper like the wsj? why or why not?
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:01:09 PM »
I know it costs 28.99 for a monthly subscription but the daily information i find to be very valuable and just plain love reading a newspaper every morning.  Anyone else in the same boat and think that  the subscription is worth it? If you do not think it is worth it what are your reasonings behind it? Would love to hear from both sides of the coin.

I do enjoy the WSJ.  It used to be $99 a year and they really raised the prices.  So I waited a year and used my Delta points 3200(which is about $32) on the Mags for Miles program and got a year subscription for $32.  Can't renew at the price but if you wait 9 months you can use your points again.  It is a pretty sweet deal.

I stopped reading newspapers after concluding they do not make me smart and informed, they just make me feel so, while in actuality I just become dumber and more controllable by soaking in manufactured, ideologically tainted bullshit and subtly replacing my own opinions with those smuggled in by the writers (if only by the selection of topics offered). This applies equally to WSJ and to publications at the other end of the political spectrum.

As a general rule, the less effort content takes to understand and the more you seem to agree with the author, the greater probability it's just bubble gum for your brain rather than anything of actual value. In that sense, WSJ seems like a pretty effortless reading material to me.

I have a friend who subscribes and shares his paper with me the day after he receives it.  Maybe you know a subscriber who would share their paper with you?

I agree the WSJ is an excellent paper in many ways.  You could also consider going to the library to read it or maybe they have an online subscription that you can access.  I work in higher ed and can also read the WJS through an online subscription through my employer's library.

I used to love reading the Economist, but I dropped it when I retired.

It sounds as if you really enjoy the paper, so by all means keep it!

WSJ is a newspaper of record, so it prints every single thing that happens or is said. Too much noise!

I subscribe to Barron's, which comes out weekly.  It provides all the financial information I need through a filter I like. Barron's is far more analytical, subjective and in-depth. And since I have a week to read it (it sits on the kitchen table), I can actually digest it properly.  Barron's also has an increasingly strong coverage of personal finance issues, from long-term care to retirement planning.  FWIW, they do recommend specific stocks and funds, rigorously track their performance of recommendations, and routinely beat the market.

I too love newspapers. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I unfortunately do not have an excellent local paper that provides substantive in-depth articles on international, national or state news.  So, I recently started subscribing to the WSJ. The paper is a joy to read. Subscribing is one of the things I do for myself. If you enjoy the paper and subscribing is not a hardship, I say go for it.

My grandpa has been reading WSJ all his life, my oldest uncle still gets his really cheap. He was able to get my grandpas subscription lowered as well. He says he just gives them a hard time on the phone until they come down, lol. You may try that.

I'd enjoy reading WSJ as well, but I'm too cheap to pay for information and I consider it mostly noise. I trade successfully without others opinions.

Appreciate the opinions and feedback.  Yes after my 3month trial is up I am going to cancel it.  It is indeed a nice read but don't find myself reading it daily after the first month of trying it out.

If you copy and paste a WSJ article title into google, click search, and click the link, you can read the article for free. Try it.

You can get free subs to WSJ and economist through this site:
https://www.rewardsurvey.com

I don't sub but  I do give others subscriptions periodically.

Personally, I don't read the WSJ but if I wanted to most local libraries have a subscription that you can read for free.

Some articles are always free to read.  Others are not.

I know because I have a subscription and I've tried having people do the above to share what I've been reading.  My subscription is free through work.

A lot of it is noise and I ignore a lot of the articles for that reason.  However I do occasionally come across articles that give me a new opinion on a subject or share information I didn't know.  One article I read really opened my eyes to why oil prices are falling, and there was also a good article recently about passive funds(and Vanguard) just obliterating active funds(especially Pimco) both in fund flows and performance last year.

With the amount of info available online, I find newspapers a bit old fashioned. And my phone doesn't make as much noise when I'm reading on the toilet.

I would rather have NYT. I can see how an investor or businessman would need a paid subscription.

Ain't that the sad truth.

I took the SF Chronicle until about a year ago.  I only miss it on leisurely weekend mornings.  I may have to subscribe again in RE, when every morning will be leisurely.

I do like the WSJ, especially the weekend/review sections, though I find that the quality of the articles has really declined in the past couple of years as they've tried to broaden their readership. Every once in a while I'll buy the Saturday issue at the newsstand but mostly I read it for free online, through proquest, a journals service that my library subscribes to. There are no pictures, and sometimes that day's articles don't make it to proquest until 8:30 am or so, but for me it's good enough.

Hmm. I will have to look into the proquest deal. Did not know any service like that existed through public libraries. I appreciate the information.
