I have a ton of old software on floppies. Did not know it was worth anything before reading the article.

I saw people discussing selling pinecones on eBay, and we're lousy with them. Considering putting my 3-year-old to work there. I think he's have a blast with it.

Ah ... eBay ... used to be a fun place until the post offices in Canada and the U.S. killed it with exorbitant fees.  I bought some great stuff on there back in the day, and the small stuff used to arrive here in Canada from the U.S. in bubble mailers with about $1 in postage on 'em.  For the odd things I sold on there, it was always more costly to ship from Canada but I did my best to charge less than my costs so as to not deter buyers.

Now, some of the U.S. sellers have these ridiculous rates with Customs fees assessed automatically as a % of sale price (WTF was NAFTA all about, anyway??) and the Canada Post fees are staggering.

Every time I log into eBay, I feel a sense of futility and think about that Albert Einstein quote about insanity = doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.

I remember the times (about 15 years ago) when I made some incredibly astute purchases of antiques from people who didn't know what they had, and I guess that's why I check in every other month or so because it used to be fun to score an amazing piece of real gold jewelry for $20 or so because someone didn't know "585" was the European stamp for 14K gold.  Those days are long gone.

I once saw a rat for sale on Ebay. The seller said he found the dryed out rat in his attic.
Been so long ago, I don't recall the price.

A few years ago someone (an atheist) decided to sell their soul to the highest eBay bidder.

The auction was pulled, and the  reason cited by eBay was that if the soul exists, selling human body parts or remains is prohibited. If the soul does not exist, then there is nothing to auction.

I never would have dreamt there was a market for used baseball style caps. Now I have sold two at about >20x markup on each. -Ap

There's some really fantastic stuff on there too, though. I got a great hiking jacket for approx $60, and it was > $300 new. Amazon can be good for used stuff as well, and sometimes even Google Shopping has great deals from lesser-known stores. Check out more tips here.

Not Ebay but still creepy (but useful if you need it).

https://www-s.nist.gov/srmors/view_detail.cfm?srm=4351       Check the certificate (.pdf) if you really feel the need.
The old description used the word "lyophilized" which I think is a cooler way of saying freeze-dried.

Sometimes when I'm having a bad day, I look this up and feel that if I'm NOT a Standard Reference Material, then the day can't be that bad.

A coworker of mine bought a horse skull on eBay once.  She had it shipped to work but didn't tell anyone in receiving and they flipped out when they opened it.

Back when it was newish... it was totally a seller's market.  I sold quite a few ridiculous things.

* broken satellite dish receiver for $150.  (It was illegal to sell the card, but you could sell a broken receiver WITH the card.)
* broken lawnmower for $125.  (It was $200 new.  You could buy a working equivalent to this one in a garage sale for $30.)

I can't remember all the dumb stuff people bought... but it was a good place for "fun money."  We never worked at it hard enough to really make any real money on it.

Hmmm....is there still a lot of random stuff on ebay? It seems (to me anyway) dominated by businesses now. I go there to buy wholesale lots of stuff.

We have a few printer cartridges we'd love to unload....wonder if eBay would be worth it? We haven't sold on there in years! (we did sell a little back in its heyday). I miss it.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
